George McGovern calls for impeachment: "Why I Believe Bush Must Go"
The Washington ComPost ^ | 6 Jan 08 | George McGovern

Posted on 01/07/2008 7:01:15 AM PST by seanmerc

As we enter the eighth year of the Bush-Cheney administration, I have belatedly and painfully concluded that the only honorable course for me is to urge the impeachment of the president and the vice president.

After the 1972 presidential election, I stood clear of calls to impeach President Richard M. Nixon for his misconduct during the campaign. I thought that my joining the impeachment effort would be seen as an expression of personal vengeance toward the president who had defeated me.

Today I have made a different choice.

Of course, there seems to be little bipartisan support for impeachment. The political scene is marked by narrow and sometimes superficial partisanship, especially among Republicans, and a lack of courage and statesmanship on the part of too many Democratic politicians. So the chances of a bipartisan impeachment and conviction are not promising.

But what are the facts?

Bush and Cheney are clearly guilty of numerous impeachable offenses. They have repeatedly violated the Constitution. They have transgressed national and international law. They have lied to the American people time after time. Their conduct and their barbaric policies have reduced our beloved country to a historic low in the eyes of people around the world. These are truly "high crimes and misdemeanors," to use the constitutional standard.

From the beginning, the Bush-Cheney team's assumption of power was the product of questionable elections that probably should have been officially challenged -- perhaps even by a congressional investigation.

In a more fundamental sense, American democracy has been derailed throughout the Bush-Cheney regime. The dominant commitment of the administration has been a murderous, illegal, nonsensical war against Iraq. That irresponsible venture has killed almost 4,000 Americans, left many times that number mentally or physically crippled, claimed the lives of an estimated 600,000 Iraqis...

McGovern,of course, has his finger on the pulse of America and thus can demand impeachment with a straight face. This from a clown who managed about 15 Electoral Votes...all those years ago.

It’s sad when senility sets in and the person does not even know it...

Oh good heavens. At this point, any calls for impeachment are nothing but show. By the time all the rigamarole was over that would be required to push Bush out of office, the next President would have been serving for several months.

Get a life, Georgie.

The American people elected Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton (twice), and Lyndon Johnson to the Presidency...but even they had the good sense not to elect George McGovern.

This article really made me think and I may be changing my opinion: Maybe euthanasia for the elderly and senile isn’t all bad.

I'm sick of seeing impeachment signs everywhere. People around my town seem to think that just because they don't like Bush/Cheney/Republicans, it's grounds for impeachment. I swear, if a dem wins the White House in the next election, I'm gonna get me a bumper sticker that says "Impeach (whoever wins)" the day after the election, and will keep it there until (whoever wins) is gone.

Now that took guts! (not) Is he mentally aware enough to realize GWB is term-limited and is gone in less than 1 year anyway?

Especially after I lost in the largest landslide victory for the opponent in the history of the Republic...

He has Chappaquiddick to thank for that chance. At least some good came out of Miss Kopechne's death.

Rabid hate for the occupant of the White House is not sufficient ground for Impeachment.

No, but it keeps Congress bottled up sufficiently that Pelosi and Reid can't do any REAL damage to the country.

God, if he had only taken his own advice and sacrificed his miserable life a long time ago the country would have been spared this tedious drivel. Stop petting your gerbil and retire to the attic with your imaginary friend.
