New sex-offender laws, meant to protect, may instead ruin lives and increase risks

Everything began with babysitting. Michael's mother often made him watch her boyfriend's 7-year-old son, Aaron.

One afternoon, while his mother was working, 15-year-old Michael

I could see merit in keeping a lifetime database on a habitual or repeat sex offender.

We wouldn't need such a database if they were executed. Rape used to be a capital crime before the US Supreme Court abolished capital punishment for rape.

Did you actually read the article? Sorry, but that teenage boy actually is a predator. Not only was he busy having oral sex with the 7 yr old boy he was babysitting, but he attempted it with other kids (at which point he got caught). He himself, of course, was a victim of abuse by a grandparent. But that doesn’t make his behavior okay, does it? And it doesn’t give him permission to create other victims of abuse, such as the 7 year old he molested, does it?

Many states are passing laws to deal with things like consensual sex between teenagers, and there is probably some clarification needed. But the teenager in question in this article is exactly why sexual predator laws are needed. Would you want him babysitting your son?

Oh I agree with you - I'm completely in favor of executing habitual offenders who rape a child. Those who can't control their sex drives shouldn't have a place around children.

If you don’t think this 15 year old will present a very real danger the rest of his life, you have blinders on.

They are needed. No one disputes the need to punish sex offenders. The issue is whether punishment should be applied across the board without taking into account the individual circumstances of an offense.

Certainly much more than the 18 year old who got a 16 year old pregnant.

Its amazing how few politicians take the time to read and discuss the laws that effect all of us.

It's amazing how few think things through.

Several years ago I read a bill that purported to do one thing, but would actually do the opposite. I wrote a letter to the bill's author explaining this -- and was stunned when he killed his own bill in his committee, and hand-wrote me a nice thank-you letter.

My point was that states are already addressing the excesses of the law, and the law itself isn’t bad but, sadly, necessary. The example the reporter used as the sob-story (a teenage boy who clearly IS a sexual predator, albeit a young one) was not exactly helping their cause, and it seemed that nobody had bothered to read the article and this creepy kid’s story.

Michael's mother often made him watch her boyfriend's 7-year-old son, Aaron.

To figure out why the lives of both these children are so screwed up, that's really all you have to read.

I confess, when I was 15 years old, I touched a 14 year old girl in a lewd manner. She touched me back in a lewd manner. Arrest the both of us.

Dang it, now I'll have to buy a second rope, so you can both be hanged and still hold hands.

See? I'm merciful; I'll let you be hanged in a kinder, more romantic way.

Bet the second rope is cheaper in the long run, too, since we won't need to pay for all those register & flier thingies.

One of my friends owns and operates the local comic shop. He recently fired one of his employees after learning that Eddie (age 29) had been caught in bed with a 14-year-old girl and is now on the KY Sex Offenders Registry for the next 20 years.

Glenn was upset for two reasons. First was the fact that Eddie is often alone in the store with young kids, which could get Glenn into a lot of hot water if anything happened (Glenn had some trouble with the law when he was younger, i.e. drugs, and he doesn't want to do anything that could get him in trouble again. Second was the fact that Eddie lied to Glenn about the three months that he was in jail in Lexington. He told Glenn that he'd gotten a job there but it didn't pan out.

“Did you actually read the article? Sorry, but that teenage boy actually is a predator. Not only was he busy having oral sex with the 7 yr old boy he was babysitting, but he attempted it with other kids (at which point he got caught).”

I read the article. You didn’t.

He was caught when the 7 year old who was molested tried it with another kid.

Admittedly the article is badly written, I had to read a couple passages more than once to figure out what the author meant to say.

“He himself, of course, was a victim of abuse by a grandparent. But that doesn’t make his behavior okay, does it? “

I didn’t say that it did, so I’m not sure what prompted the rhetorical question.

“But the teenager in question in this article is exactly why sexual predator laws are needed. Would you want him babysitting your son?”

I would never leave a child in the care of another child, and even then, in the care of very few adults.

When your kids are adults and get married you won’t be able to order them around anymore.

Not a bad idea to suggest it, though.

Kind of what I thought too. My youngest son was 18 years old when he got his first mortgage on a home, married at about age 23. My oldest boy was closer to 25 when he got married and had been supporting himself for at least 5 or 6 years. You don't order "kids" when they are that age, all you can do is suggest.
