As we enter the eighth year of the Bush-Cheney administration, I have belatedly and painfully concluded that the only honorable course for me is to urge the impeachment of the president and the vice president.
After the 1972 presidential election, I stood clear of calls to impeach President Richard M. Nixon for his misconduct during the campaign. I thought that my joining the impeachment effort would be seen as an expression of personal vengeance toward the president who had defeated me.
Today I have made a different choice.
Of course, there seems to be little bipartisan support for impeachment. The political scene is marked by narrow and sometimes superficial partisanship, especially among Republicans, and a lack of courage and statesmanship on the part of too many Democratic politicians. So the chances of a bipartisan impeachment and conviction are not promising.
But what are the facts?
Bush and Cheney are clearly guilty of numerous impeachable offenses. They have repeatedly violated the Constitution. They have transgressed national and international law. They have lied to the American people time after time. Their conduct and their barbaric policies have reduced our beloved country to a historic low in the eyes of people around the world. These are truly "high crimes and misdemeanors," to use the constitutional standard.
From the beginning, the Bush-Cheney team's assumption of power was the product of questionable elections that probably should have been officially challenged -- perhaps even by a congressional investigation.

Wake up, George. This is 2008. First, this whole impeachment scenario is laughable on it’s face. Second, beyond that, George, it’s an election year so they will be gone soon anyway.
What a maroon.
He has finally completely lost his mind.
It’s ok George, no one is listening to you anyway.
Huh.
A sitting President was caught lying under oath in a workplace sexual harassment lawsuit -- one where he was the accused executive level predator and the victim was a hapless low level employee.
Seems that "bi-partisan" support for an impeachment would be a snap.
But where were all the democrat hack Congressmen (and women) who pilloried Clarence Thomas based upon spurious allegations from a person whose sanity had been questioned?
They were NOT willing to step up to impeach OR convict.
Mr. McGovern, those of us who are old enough remember your anti-American record from way back. Now sit down and shut up.
It’s interesting that lefties believe fervently in their own fabrications.
I think an impeachment trial would be a good thing. All these baseless allegations have taken on a mythic reality. A trial would shred their contentions and illusions.
How come lefties are never asked if we or the Iraqis would be better off with Saddam still in power?
Oh do hurry. You’ve only 11 months left. Whatever shall we do if Bush and Cheney aren’t impeached? Oh, we’ll never get even for Clinton’s impeachment! Oh, the pain! Oh, whine, snivle, hurt!
*crickets* George! Can you hear them? Is it like when Dennis stepped onto his balcony and "smelled rose petals" and was "directed" by an some alien presence (the direction was never made clear)? George try to focus!
I dunno, think he's a little younger than that. In his eighties more like it.
His wife died last year. Have no idea where all his kids are. They did have a large family. Of course he did lose one daughter tragically.
Look, he was a flake in 1972 and he's a flake now. Proving that some things never change.
It’s clear, that the old goat has no clue whatsoever about the constitution
The Democrat Propaganda Machine (which includes the Washington Post, of course) and Leftist kooks are still campaigning against G. W. Bush. They don't seem to understand that he's not running in the upcoming election.
But that's minor. There's so much, much more that they don't understand...! The lucid mind doesn't know where to begin...
We can hope that their delusions continue. They are so easily dispatched with truth.
Talk is cheap.
Election '08 is the focus point.
We know multitasking is not a strong suit of the Democrats. Cowardice or "couard"(fr), defined as "one with a tail", does more accurately describe.
This aforementioned impeachment rhetoric is only allowed as background noise, so these "political peasants" remain party motivated.
The financial costs alone to "we the taxpayers" would be enormous! Politics is, you have to remember, all a stage. Those voices alluded to here are from the "extras" or bit players allowed to take part.
Bring it on!
McGovern says that he would gladly “give his life” to help his country. If that’s the case, he should do the honorable thing, retreat to his garage, turn on the car engine and enjoy a Carbon Monoxide sandwich...this guy has been a detriment to this nation ever since he turned in his Uniform for a career in Politics.
So what?
Poor old George McGovern has become senile. Why rip the country apart to impeach Bush when his term ends this year anyway? What possible end could come out of this? Note doddering old George has already embraced Hillary though probably because he mistook her for Dennis Kucinich and his space alien friends.
Is there a provision for impeaching a former Presidential candidate? That would seem to be the only appropriate response to this dishonest, disloyal, socialist-statist leftist Democrat apologist.
That the Washington Compost gives this guy space to spread this babble is disgusting.
Man, McGovern has really lost his mind. He is a full-blown moonbat now.
George McGovern was a true American hero in WWII, and deserves our undying gratitude. However, even heroes can grow senile.
You haven't been relevant since Mood Rings and Nehru jackets were popular. And even then, the only place you were relevant was in the rarefied atmosphere of Georgetown penthouses. That may explain why you suffered the worst defeat in the history of the United States -- hardly a recommendation for your credibility.
Go away, George. You should have died decades ago, so that your career wouldn't be the only thing in the crypt.
Sincerely,
America
If Hillary is in trouble with the Democrat base because she is a "centrist", how far left must the Democrat party be?
