Tancredo sees loss in Huckabee win(McCain "worst in the bunch")
The Denver Post ^ | 01/04/2008 | The Denver Post

For Tom Tancredo, who stepped out of the Republican race to support Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee's runaway win in Iowa on Thursday spelled big trouble for the Colorado congressman's anti-illegal-immigration cause.

"It's a discouraging thing," Tancredo said. "Because, really, to tell the truth, the real winner in this thing is McCain. . . . I think he's the worst in the bunch."

During his run for the GOP presidential nomination, Tancredo — whose single issue was a hard-line stance against illegal immigration — deeply criticized John McCain, the Arizona senator, for reform measures Tancredo equated with amnesty.

Tancredo said he thought Romney could fight back, if he had the will. Asked whether he wished he had remained in the race, Tancredo said no, adding that he was happy to be home with his family in his Littleton district. "I'd rather be here tonight than anywhere in Iowa," he said, laughing.

"I grew up ranching and concluded many years ago that farmers are stupid."

LOL! I spent most of my adult life living on a farm breeding TB's, and I concluded the same. Really nice people, but stupid.

Like it or not, it takes a classy man of stature and class (usually) to win the Presidency.

Lot's of ex-presidents were let's say ugly-Lincoln being one. You do have a good point about today voting public though. We are obsessed with looks and want our president to be good looking (Although I don't care myself)

Shoot. You’re right. I remembered the quote, googled it, and mis-read its reference on this page: http://www.nationalcenter.org/2005/07/poor-uneducated-and-easy-to-command.html

Michael Weisskopf is the one who initially wrote that, as you correctly point out.

I can't image any politician going up against Wal-Mart -Tyson Chicken in Arkansas.

But as Huck moves to the big time - national stage?

Sounds like he is flexible in his positions.

Huck and Tancredo’s positions on illegal immigration are almost identical. If you go to Huck’s site it’s all spelled out.

Huck and Tancredo's HISTORIES are diametrically opposed. Huckabee has used "liberation theology" style rhetoric for years to denounce anyone who wanted to crack down on illegal immigration. He called them racist. He lovingly spoke before LaRaza like Lindsay Graham did (another phony who is now pretending he is against amnesty). He was Tyson's stooge for slave labor his entire time as governor. He is a 100% fraud on the issue. I don't care if he proposes to deport every single illegal. He simply cannot be trusted.

If good looks are necessary to be the President, where does Hillary stand? She not a very good looking guy...

Mike Huckabee just does not project strength, power, or leadership ... all vital essentials in today’s world.

Sorry to be petty, but Huck just looks like a Wally Cox type of person, and that is exactly what we do not need in today’s world.

I am really not that obsessed with Huckabee’s past record, or Romney’s for that matter.

Huckabee is frumpy, he has a lispy kind of speaking mannor, and other traits.

I understand I’m being petty, but it is what I and many others think of Huckabee, but haven’t been able to express.

Thompson projects strength and power, and so does McCain.

Hunter surely does, and GWB does also.

Hillary will NOT, which is why she is doing so well, and Obacko is doing great. Obacko seems to project strength of power.

Huckabee just is waay to wimpy. Shallow, but true.

Re: Post 48

I agree with you. Tancredo worked very hard against the illegals. I think he must have talked to Mitt and was assured he would work to protect our borders. I believe he didn’t think Hunter (like himself) or Thompson didn’t have a chance and he sure didn’t want huckabee or mccain in there. I really appreciate all Tancredo has done and think he will probably continue to work to protect our borders anyway he can.

You are very selective in your application of evidence from the US Senate. For nearly every name you offered I could offer a counter argument, with a name and face, of Senators who are not in the least bit "lookers".

Yes, you are right on the Senate. I was thinking more of the Presidential.

The further we have gotten into the age of TV, the more looks and persona matter -- due to the fact that everyone can see every square inch as opposed to the pre-1960 days of mostly radio.

Just look at recent history, starting with Barak Obama. A good looking charisma of a candidate if I ever saw one. In fact, that;s ALL he's got. He's a loon other than his good looks and charisma.

Then GWB, a good looking man. Solid, southern drawl. Great looking wife in Laura. Beautiful daughters.

Then Bill Clinton. women absolutely swooned over the man.

GHWBush .... well, not so much. But certainly a great five-child family which looks great.

Ronald Reagan - well, need I say more. Hollywood movie star. Beautiful wife. Personality and affability out the ying yang.

Jimmy Carter. Not fabulous, but his wife was beautiful.

If you go to Huck’s site it’s all spelled out.

Of course Huck is now claiming he will be tough on illegal immigrants.

If he continued in the same way he handled illegals as Ark. Governor, he would be laughed all the way back to Hope... or where ever he came from.

Then again, I think the Iowan church folks had their minds made up to support Huckabee, and nothing would change that come hell or high water.

If Obama is the Democratic nominee, he will make Huckabee look so out of touch, so frumpy, so narrowly focused as a Christian ONLY -- that the Democrats will win 40 out of 50 states.

Huckabee would only win Arkansas and a few southern states. He would get smooshed in California, and all the other northern and mid-western states. The Republican establishment cannot stand Mike Huckabee, not because he's a bad guy, but because his entire message is that he is MORE Christian than anyone else.

As a rock-ribbed Christian myself, THAT EVEN UPSETS ME.
