The New Rules of Marriage

Of course, there is much to disdain about The New Rules of Marriage, but what offended me most was its pervasive celebration of inequality amongst the sexes. Women want more out of relationships today so…men must give it to them. Why is that the case? In every equitable transaction, the side who asks for more must offer more in exchange. This leads us to ask, what do modern women offer men that is superior to what their predecessors proffered in the past?......

It has to do with not insulting and belittling the person you've vowed to love and honor.

You're proving my point. Is it impossible to point out the flaw in a woman's logic without causing them to feel insulted or belittled? I guess not.

I love the quote from the article... and I think it's very good advice for marriage. Notice also that it is not gender specific, it applies to both parties...

Of course, if you'd read the review, you would realize that the quote didn't apply to both...just the husband.

I think you're missing the whole point of the quote. And it has nothing to do with right, wrong, logic or emotion. It has to do with not insulting and belittling the person you've vowed to love and honor.

You are wrong.

Anyone who structures disagreements such that giving an accurate description of bad behavior constitutes "insulting and belittling" is practicing emotional blackmail. "Emotion" is not common ground on which men and women can meet.

Anything that involves more than one person pursuing their own interests must involve right, wrong, and logic, because it's the only truly fair language to forge agreements.

Those who "do" don't have to tell.

With all of your talkin', I'm bettin' that you're pretty much under your wife's ... er ... "protection."

I bet I couldnt count on one hand the number FR threads solely devoted to bashing men the way some do women...

Reason and experience says you are correct. The threads that you see "bashing women," are just a response to what men live with every day...and see every day.

FR is the counterbalance...and this thread seems to be not about women, but women of a certain mentality, and their enablers...those who say they're looking for a "partnership," but who seek to be the "senior partner."

Surely, you see the difference?

I adore seeing a man drag his knuckles... it's sooo cute... Mr. Maigrey does it quite well, and does it often.

Maybe he took some lessons at some point with you.....

No TT, the flaw in the logic is yours. Your post, recopied here:

This is my largest problem with women. They'd rather have emotional support for their wrong thinking than be told how wrong they are. How can you sustain a relationship where right and wrong is based on one's chromosomes? Once men realize that logic doesn't matter to women, most have a really difficult time coming up with a Plan B for relating to them.

What you have there is a whiny red herring wrapped around a straw man. It is not an insult per se to correctly tell a woman she is wrong, but it may be hurtful and highly detrimental to the relationship to tell her she is not capable of understanding logic or knowing right from wrong.

You are supposed to love this person. You shouldn't want to make them feel small and stupid, man or woman.

Of course, if you'd read the review, you would realize that the quote didn't apply to both...just the husband.

That he thinks so only shows that he wants to be seen as a victim. Not very manly, and not true. I think the concept should apply to both.

Pick any TV commerical where there is a husband and wife protrayed. 99.99% of the time the husband is a bumbling dufus and the wife a superior being. I am sick of it.

Oh God, I had forgotten about starched underwear, my military school laundry starched everything.

Underwear and socks with a crease.

“Do they still have straight bars in San Fran? If so, go about an hour before closing time and start chatting up the cows.”

Yes, they still have straight bars in SF. Sheesh.

Actually, the Bay Area is chock full of attractive, professional women, who are all single and most definitely looking. They complain endlessy about not being able to find a decent guy.

When you ask what a decent guy IS, is when you discover why they’re single, and will remain so, or go through several divorces.

I have given up dating in the Bay Area. The few women worth dating were snapped up and married a long time ago (the ones in my age bracket, anyway).

Date in the Bay Area at your own risk. You have been warned. There’s a LOT of free, easy sex to be had. If you can’t get lucky in SF, you arent trying.

Just don’t let them know your phone number or e-mail or address. Trust me.

There’s thousands of attractive, deranged women in the Bay Area just waiting for you to come along so they can blame their entire lives on you.

Do i sound bitter? :)

I never got his answer, I just hung up and wanted to vomit.

I'm glad I'm not your wife. Common courtesy would dictate he check with his wife about leaving her at home to go play poker on a Saturday night. Most of the couples I know spend Saturday night together whether its as simple as ordering pizza and renting movies or having a "date night". Usually he's been home during the day and his time has been spent doing honey-do's, erranding (with her) or working on a hobby he may have. He's been available and Saturday night is the unwinding time. Heck, even when dating as a teen or college student Saturday is considered the big date night.

Why not have poker on a Friday night? Even then if poker isn't a regular occurrence he should check in with the wife as again, it's common courtesy.

Are you married? Ever been? Just curious.

LOL!
Just fight the good fight sis :)
You have a good marriage, you love your hubby and he loves you,,,,, and it shows.

I was out doin’ all kinds of ‘unladylike’ stuff....
Paying bills, setting up at the second studio,
grocery shopping,
going to HD to buy tile to fix the floor this weekend.

Cook? Love to do it, just don’t have the time.

So I’m eating Christmas cookies for supper ;) If I got married, would I have to give all this up???
