OCEANSIDE ---- A pursuit suspect from Oceanside stopped his vehicle midspan on the Coronado Bridge, exited the car and jumped off the bridge at about 7:25 p.m.Monday, along with an Oceanside police dog that tried to stop him, according to California Highway Patrol officer Larry Landeros. The man lived, but the dog died.
The pursuit began in Oceanside at 6:44 p.m after police suspected the driver was intoxicated. During the pursuit, the man was involved in a hit-and-run crash, authorities said.Highway Patrol officers joined the pursuit southbound on Interstate 5 as the car approached the Coronado Bridge, Landeros said.
The police dog lunged at the suspect as he hesitated momentarily after exiting his vehicle. The dog, a German shepherd, and the suspect both fell and the dog's body has been recovered, Landeros said.

sad ping
Did you see that the man fell 200 feet into the water and survived?
arOOOOOOOOOOOO! arrOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
wow!
“The dog actually took the driver to the ground and then he actually lifted the dog up and jumped over the side,” CHP Sgt. Steven Toth said.
I was surprised he survived, for now. My fiance works under CBBridge on a catwalk w/harness. He has seen a few jump and they haven’t survived. Some miss the water and land on a pier cap. Messy.
Poor doggie.
I my opinion the dog deserves a hero’s funeral.
I wonder if they will charge him with murdering a police officer?
I never liked german shepherds or pit bulls...
Interesting... Nice dogs U got there.
Technically they can.
People have survived jumping off the Golden Gate and Brooklyn Bridges as well. The odds are not good, but if you hit the water just right, you are not killed outright. Then there are the tides and cold to contend with. One woman survived a jump off the Golden Gate Bridge and was successful in killing herself when she jumped off it again a few weeks later.
Shepherds are sweet. Pit’s are bait.
This dog is neither; it's a Belgian Malinois.
I've never met anyone the didn't like German Shepherds. First time for everything I guess. Two very different dogs.
Hopefully the suspect will be charged with the dogs death.
If we had peace officers instead of law enforcement officers, no dog would have been on the force, and no dog would have been killed.
