More baby boomers head to Mountain West
Associated Press ^ | 12/28/2007 | MEAD GRUVER

John Kerr wasn't dreaming of palm trees and balmy winters when he retired from WGBH, the Boston public TV station known for producing such hits as "Antiques Roadshow." His thoughts had gone West.

The 69-year-old put on a green uniform and Smokey Bear hat and became a seasonal ranger in Yellowstone National Park, where snow can fall every month of the year, including July.

"That's why they have wood stoves and furnaces," Kerr said. "Warm weather isn't the issue for me. It's keeping vital and interested and involved."

Demographers say thousands of people like Kerr are heading to the Rocky Mountain West in their later years. Forget the warmth of Florida and Arizona. Baby boomers, in particular, are gravitating toward the peaks and sagebrush basins of Wyoming and Montana, promising to turn these states from relatively young into two of the nation's oldest.

They're drawn by low crime, fresh air, little traffic and abundant outdoor activities, said Larry Swanson, an economist and director of the Center for the Rocky Mountain West in Missoula, Mont.

The populations of Montana and Wyoming are not very old. In 2000, Montana ranked 18th and Wyoming 43rd for the relative size of their 65-and-over populations. But by 2030, the Census Bureau predicts Montana will rank fifth and Wyoming third in the nation for their over-65 populations.

Florida is expected to remain on top, though Wyoming and Montana will both likely be a good deal older than Arizona—even as the Grand Canyon State moves up from 22nd to 14th.

The two states are not seeking out older people; they are being discovered.

Liberals : Do NOT do it.

Liberals : Stay in your liberal states with high taxes, high crime, massive gun laws, driver's licenses for illegals, amnesty programs for illegals, "free" health care and other "free" stuff...

Next, they will try to bring their socialism to us.

As a lifelong Boston area resident I say good-riddance to John Kerr and the WGBH types. I remember him and the constant fundraising.

He is NOT a Boomer,he’s too old.

Just what I want to do when I get old, hunker down inside by the fire....Not.

Odd...The older I get, the more I can't stand the frigid cold.

I'll stick to year round warmer climates thanks.

We do not want him nor his friends.

They might be happier in North Korea with all that free stuff.

This baby boomer moved to Colorado. I'm not in the least bothered by the snow.

Here in the Banana Belt, I find I can still wear shorts on a sunny winter day and I'm not bothered by the low temperature. Its not that low that it causes one to shiver. Its the perfect winter climate for me in the southwest Colorado mountains. People just haven't discovered how invigorating it can be.

Now that they’ve fouled the nest in Florida, old liberals from the NE will infest the West with their socialism and enviro-worship. CO saw the cancer spread from Boulder. Good luck, you poor Western conservatives, who will see your taxes increase, your freedom decrease, and your representation in D.C. look that that of MA.

Had some friends who lived in Mass. Hated the snow and winters. Moved to Boca. Hated it. Moved to Charlotte, don’t like it much better. Now where?

Granted environment has an effect, but some people are never happy no matter where or what.

I hate “liberals” and their despoiling all of America. Some of the A holes have even moved to Texas. You don’t wanna go to Austin.

“Liberals” ruin, spoil and screw up everything. I hope they all die. Simple as that. Sorry.

Liberals: Just stay in your commie enclaves like Jackson Hole and Sun Valley. You don’t want anything to do with the rest of the West. We pick up dates at family reunions.

(There. Pass it on.)

It exists between Leadville and Salida. Mild climate and 330 days of sunshine year around. The view is just beautiful here.

My wife and I own 80 acres outside of Cheyenne, WY. That is where we are retiring to, mainly to get away from the rat race and the liberal insanity of the east coast. Liberals don’t fare well in Cheyyene. It’s a conservative town with little tolerance for whining.

Southwest, in Telluride, Colorado, it's 21 degrees right now, with a real feel temp of 14 degrees.

You wearing shorts outside?
