Within hours of learning he could face the death penalty if he's found guilty of killing three generations of the same family on Christmas Eve, Joseph McEnroe said Friday he has new respect for life.
"You never really realize what life is worth until something like this happens," he said.
During a 15-minute interview at the King County Jail, McEnroe said he's sorry six members of the Anderson family are dead and that he regretted cutting contact with his own family.
Dressed in a white jumpsuit reserved for "ultra-security" inmates, McEnroe wouldn't talk about what happened Christmas Eve at a rural home near Carnation. There, police and prosecutors allege, he and his girlfriend, Michele Anderson, methodically shot Anderson's parents and brother, the brother's wife and their two young children.
"I'm sorry that they're gone. They were my family, too, you know?" McEnroe, 29, said of the victims. "I hope wherever they're at, they're at peace. That's all I'm going to say about them."
McEnroe and Anderson each were charged earlier Friday with six counts of aggravated first-degree murder in the Anderson family slayings.
With his hands chained to his waist, McEnroe had to hunch and sit sideways to talk through a phone in the visiting booth, where a thick window separates inmates and visitors. Tall and slim with a goatee and shoulder-length dark hair, McEnroe spoke softly. At times, his eyes appeared misty.
McEnroe said jail officials have placed him on suicide watch: "I was having a very hard time, but no matter how this turns out, I'm going to try and hold on... I decided I'm going to try and stay alive."
He asked about his family his mother and siblings in Minneapolis and an aunt and cousins in California. McEnroe stopped talking to them five years ago...

That long hair will give the scumbag’s new prison boyfriends something to hold onto.
None of them could say, "I shot the teller," "I hit another motorist," or, "I'm sorry I killed them." It's almost Clintonesque.
Prison is a waste of tax payer money, hang the scumbag.
Soon.
Two of the victims, Olivia and Nathan Anderson
Have pity on the poor orphan..
Monster.
Toast him. Toast the son of a bitch. Him and his little sweetie that was the daughter, who shot her own father.
I remember when I was driving home from work and heard about a killing at a bank in Olympia.
A guy walked in, shot two tellers, and left.
A few minutes later, another fellow shows up to have lunch with his wife, he finds her behind the counter, and she dies in his arms.
After that, the bastard assassin lives out his life in Washington state correctional facilities, and even gets a free liver transplant courtesy of Washington state taxpayers (of which I am one), before he croaks.
Now, King County is trying to decide if the two should get the death penalty.
Let justice be done. What good is a “right to privacy” in the Washington state constitution if it doesn’t sorta imply the “Right to live”?
Unless he has ears. He does have that manson glaze in his eyes... I hope someone gives him a case of Chernobyl Hemorrhoids!
LLS
And for those who don’t know, the guys name was Mitchell Rupe.
Cue Gloria Gaynor's disco hit, " I Will Survive"/
What a crock. I do hope someone sticks a shank into him.
Wow, the creep is apologizing already and he hasn’t been to trial. Goes to prove that criminal trash aren’t the brightest bulbs in the string. He should know a creep is supposed to wait until just before the fluid goes in the tube to turn to the survivors and make a “heartfelt” apology. Its always such a nice touch </sarc>.
And the sweet daughter too.
I’ll spring for the rope - for BOTH of them!
I read an article that said they will take into account the wishes of the victims' families. I sure hope all the family members are on board for getting rid of these two demons. I know it won't happen soon enough though. There's already talk in one of these articles that daddy was abusive--setting up the demon daughter as the victim.
"McEnroe told detectives that Nathan held the batteries up in one hand and gave '... the look of complete comprehension ... as if he understood." McEnroe then fired one last bullet through Nathan's head, according to the affidavit.
Very difficult to understand.
Fer cryin out loud, give him a rope!
Course you know there’s probably lawyers lined up outside ready to “represent” him and give him his “fair trial”. The fact that they will “make a few bucks” is sorta lost in the background.
And of course judges who might “run for office” will give them wide latitude.
So, if you live in Washington state, and you decide to “Kill your neighbors”, then you might actually be justified!!!
