War On Terror: Benazir Bhutto gave up a comfortable life in Britain to return to Pakistan where she felt the military regime wasn't doing enough to defeat terrorists. Tragically, she was right.
Running for prime minister, Bhutto had openly vowed to defeat al-Qaida and deny it the sanctuary it had gained in Pakistan under President Pervez Musharraf.
Benazir Bhutto, assassinated Thursday, votes for the first time in 1988.
"I am what the terrorists fear most," she said.
Her assassination was a tragic blow to her party's bid to check Musharraf in the Jan. 8 election, a contest that is now meaningless. She was the leading opposition candidate.
Musharraf, who had twice placed Bhutto under house arrest, no longer has to worry about an increasingly frustrated West using her as leverage to force democratic reforms or action against al-Qaida.
The former prime minister told CNN upon returning to her country that the risks of her assassination were worth it to save Pakistan from Islamic extremism and to stand up for democracy.

Does the person murdered have to be a high profile politician and killed in a public setting?
Is it the way the person is murdered; gun shot from 300 meters away, car bomb, poison?
I know without a doubt in my mind that this was an assassination and I don't mean to make lite of it.
I know if I were to be killed by gun shot or a car bomb I would be a victum of a murder not assassination.
Don’t be surprised if this boosts her party in the polls. The sympathy vote effect.
I think if you are a former national leader or a current viable candidate to be a major leader it’s called an assasination. I’m not sure the manner of death is important. So yeah, I think the term is reserved for high profile politicians, but I’m not sure the method or setting really manner.
It seems to be a matter of the degree of preparation taken to kill the victim, the targeted nature of the killing of a particular individual and the importance of the victim.
According to Webster's definition (below), it seems that if you were important enough to have somebody take the all the trouble to kill you with a car bomb, you would have the honor of being "assassinated" instead of merely "murdered".
Being shot by a robber at a 7-11 for being at the wrong place at the wrong time only qualifies you for "murder".

Interesting question. According to the dictionary definitions I looked at "assassination" is a murder with political implications or the murder of a public figure.
I knew she was dead 10 weeks ago when it was confirmed she was returning to that place. She must have decided she loved her country more than the 30+ years or so she had left to live.
In a murder the crime is the murder, in an assassination the consequences go far beyond murder.
I just heard a quote from her on the radio. She said ‘ A REAL Muslim would not kill a woman...”
She was dead wrong. She lived in fantasy re. Islam and died in denial.
REAL Islam killed her.
