McCain proposes new welfare program
Spero News ^ | December 23, 2007 | Pat Toomey

Posted on 12/26/2007 10:33:07 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

In his latest attack on the free market and what appears to be a calculated political move to appeal to Michigan voters, John McCain wants to create a new welfare program for manufacturing workers.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Senator McCain announced yesterday a plan to use federal dollars to make up the salary difference for workers who lose manufacturing jobs and are forced to accept lower-paying jobs until they find new careers.

This is exactly the kind of plan you expect to hear from the Democratic candidates, not an alleged economic conservative, The government should not be in the business of guaranteeing wages. In a dynamic economy, wage and employment changes are inevitable and part of the normal process of economic growth and technological innovation.

In addition, McCain’s welfare program has the potential to unleash a series of perverse incentives, the worst of which is the disincentive to learn new skills and assume challenging new career paths. Why make an effort to learn new skills and take on a challenge when John McCain will make taxpayers pay your former wage for even a minimum wage job? The program also has the potential to be exorbitantly expensive as many workers opt to settle for low-paying jobs so long as McCain doles out taxpayer subsidies.

This is the latest evidence that John McCain doesn’t appreciate the normal dynamics of a healthy economy and lacks confidence in the ability of workers to forge a successful new career without government handouts.

That would be it. ;-)

If McCain is willing to give our money to manufacturing job losses then what about high tech losses from jobs that go overseas or to H1B workers.

I think this is going to cost us everything we have, then he will have to give us some federal dollars for money lost to government nannyism.

It’s a vicious cycle McCain, you’re going crazy.

Good Lord and its a "camels nose" proposal.

Those worker wont be happy throwing quarter pounders for $39.00 an hour.......Oh no they will immediately whine, "what about my families health care" and then "what about my 401 & pension contributions".

I can see it now matching pension funds for your gov't stipend hourly worker subsidy.

Thank god he's a conservative.

What’s a “federal dollar”? Is it like a real dollar that the Government takes from me through income taxes, sales taxes, gas taxes, liquor taxes cigarette taxes, phone taxes, utility taxes, investment taxes, property taxes, Social Security taxes, Medicare taxes and the myriad of “fees” that our idiot politicians think up in the dead of night? Just asking...

You have to be kidding! Most everyone knows that ALL money belongs to the government. They are just kind enough to let you keep a small amount for yourself. /s

I knew it, I just got finished posting that the government would divine a NEW program to fill the money flow void. McCain would NOT limit his NEW program to American citizens alone it would apply to allllll the ‘workers’ legal or NOT.

I still expect McCain to literally and publicly join hands with Hillry for the next election. Although this time we won’t be getting two for the price of one.

You know... Rudy, Mitt, and the Huckster had pretty much succeeded in doing the near-impossible: making McCain look like a tolerable, if not entirely acceptable, backup candidate.

Then McCain goes and does something like this.

It's a good thing Fred's going to win this, so I don't have to worry about the idea of even potentially supporting any of those clowns.

And McCain proposes a new entitlement program.

As he runs around the country saying that he is the only fiscal conservative in the race and claiming that he and only he will be the one to cut pork.....jeez.

Republican party has changed so much since Goldwater that he wouldn’t even recognize it.

Nothing every changes in politics from the top down, it has to come up thru the grass roots level.

Has Juan McCain ever had a job, he certainly doesn’t like any Taxcuts? I think he is as ignorant of basic Economic or other Conservative principles...Juan just loves the Federal Government dollars for votes and anything else to keep the incumbent crooks in office aka McCain-Feingold.
McCain and Sen. JFKerry also managed to find wealthy 2nd wives so they could avoid any real work!
Bunch of Frauds!

Yet he's for flooding the labor market with illegal aliens and creating the conditions for which he can create new parasites. It's a more radical form of communism than Marx ever dreamed of.

Well, I liked him for a few days after one his workers called CNN “The Clinton News Network.”
This should make him popular with the conservative primary voters.
Not.
