Bleeding-heart types looking for a "minority cause for which to advocate in the 2008 presidential elections are torn between the candidacies of a woman, two African- Americans, a Hispanic and a former mayor of Cleveland who is more of a communist than Vladimir Putin.
Tough choices, those, and all of them Democrats.
In the interest of fairness, however, the name of Mitt Romney should be added to the shopping list of those searching for an oppressed minority to support.
As a practicing member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons), Romney is aligned with one of the most persecuted and oppressed minorities in history. Even in these enlightened times, millions of Americans say they would not vote for the charismatic ex-governor of Massachusetts under any circumstances.
And, in an amazing demonstration of religious bigotry, a New Hampshire liberal rag, the Concord Monitor, used its Sunday editorial pages to tell readers why they should not vote for Mitt Romney.
This "anti-endorsement" is unprecedented, unfair, un-American and unwise.
Editors at the Concord Monitor even went so far as to warn readers that Romney must be stopped ". . . because he lacks the core philosophical beliefs to be a trustworthy president."

That particular bit of editorial malfeasance is a thinly-veiled assault on Romney's Mormon faith, pure and simple.
Fact of the matter is that Mitt Romney is the most conservative candidate running for the White House. He is also the most experienced and qualified, a fact attested to by his service as the governor of liberal-infested Massachusetts, and by his enormously successful personal finances.
Mitt Romney knows how to work with people from diverse political backgrounds, how to overcome discrimination and adversity, and he knows how to run a large organization. No other candidate comes close to matching his qualifications for taking over the Oval Office on Ja
I also learned that Mitt is a conservative. I had no idea. You could have knocked me over with a feather.
Hey, it’s a curse. I’m still giggling about “the mud flap.” My ribs are getting sore.
Reagan has gotten a bum rap for decades for allegedly flip-flopping on abortion. As California governor, Reagan signed a bill which permitted abortions for "health" reasons. He and the legislature were both assured that it would only permit abortions in a few very unique circumstances where the mother was suffering severe physical trauma from the pregnancy. After the bill became law, judges "interpreted" the word "health" to mean virtually anything, such as mental stress, and the result was abortion-on-demand. But that was not Reagan's intention. He never described himself as "pro-choice" and at no point in his career ever supported an abortion legalization proposal except for that one bill, which was misinterpreted afterward by the courts and would have only permitted a handful of hard circumstance abortions per year if applied properly.
On amnesty, Reagan agreed to it after being told there were three million illegals in the country and that a one-time amnesty would be justifiable if afterward we cracked down and didn't let any more come in. The problem there was that once Bush I took office, followed by Clinton and Bush II, there was no effort to protect the borders and we now have 12 to 20 million illegals here.
Reagan made some mistakes, but he learned from them. As president, he fought efforts by Congress to add a "health" provision to the Hyde Amendment, because he had learned that that word would be perverted by the courts. Had he remained in office, he would never have supported another blanket amnesty.
The mormon identity has been steeped in the mantra of "persecution" for over 150 years. It's proclaimed from the pulpit and sung about in mormon hymns to this day. Mormon plays are perfomed commemorating "victim" occurences in mormon history.
A response to Gordon B. Hinckley's The Mormons' Trail of Hope
The "Victim" hair shirt is as much a part of the mormon garb as the temple garments. You can see it being flourished daily on threads on FR in the continual howls of "bigot","hater", "liar" and calls for censorship whenever Romney is questioned or factual mormon dogma or history is presented.
You've been here on FR since 1998..and you didn't know????
Our guiding principle has always been to select the most conservative viable candidate. In our judgment, that candidate is Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts.
In the months before announcing his bid for the Republican presidential nomination, former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts contributed tens of thousands of dollars of his personal fortune to several conservative groups in a position to influence his image on the right.
Last December, a foundation controlled by Mr. Romney made contributions of $10,000 to $15,000 to each of three Massachusetts organizations associated with major national conservative groups: the antiabortion Massachusetts Citizens for Life, Massachusetts Citizens for Limited Taxation and the Christian conservative Massachusetts Family Institute.
Mr. Romney and a group of his supporters also contributed a total of about $10,000 to a nonprofit group affiliated with National Review. Over the past two years, he contributed $35,000 to the Federalist Society, an influential network of conservative lawyers. And in December 2005, he contributed $25,000 to the Heritage Foundation, a leading conservative research organization.
The recipients of Mr. Romneys donations said the money had no influence on them. But some of the groups, notably Citizens for Life and the Family Institute, have turned supportive of Mr. Romney after criticizing him in the past.
Coming on the eve of his presidential campaign, Mr. Romneys contributions could create the appearance of a conflict of interest for groups often asked to evaluate him. All the groups said he had never contributed before, and his foundations public tax filings show no previous gifts to similar groups. Its 2006 contributions will become public with its tax filings later this year.
In Romneys Bid, His Wallet Opens to the Right
LOL, how tacky!
Well, I'm still here and I've uttered many things about socks in the past.
Let's see how this works.
Magic socks.
Magic socks.
Magic socks.
Magic socks.

Saundra is just trying to drum up hits for her claim to fame, a long-dead thread about the horrible persecution she suffered from the Baptists just because she is, (gasp) mormon!. IIRC, someone wouldn't let her husband pray at some function or other.
It ended up being a wonderful opportunity for FReepers to post huge amounts of facts about mormon dogma and practices, and didn't hurt the Baptists at all. ;)
If you want the most persecuted and oppressed minorities, I have a short list:
Jews
Blacks
Armenians
Slavs
You seem to have a very selective list. When have Jews, Armenians and Slavs been persecuted in our country? I would think Indians would top the list followed by Mormons and Blacks.
He didn’t specify “our country.” He said “in history.”
I think it is a safe bet that he was talking about our history : )
By your 'history' standard not even the people that you listed rank in the top ten of the most persecuted.
I explained this to two staunch conservative members of my family (also Romney supporters) when visiting with them on Christmas day. We laughed. : )
It is not what he said.
By your 'history' standard not even the people that you listed rank in the top ten of the most persecuted.
Like hell.
You aren’t the least bit funny, but you are vicious, Elsie. And most people see it.
I see the “lack of class” by some posters here as well.
That’s not the picture that I was talking about.
Slavs were never welcomed with open arms in this country, but neither were many other groups. That said, being one half Slavic, I'd say you were right!
Mormons are one of the most persecuted groups in American history. What my Slavic grandparents endured, upon their arrival to this country, wasn't even close to what Mormons have had to endure.
Class???? What is that? : )
