Children are among those who are most devastated by climate change, the United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF) announced today.
They pay with their health, their development and too often also with their lives, Hilde Johnson, UNICEF Deputy Executive Director, told reporters in New York.
Every year, three million children under the age of five die from environment-linked diseases, such as diarrhoeal disease, respiratory infections and malaria, and the agency predicts that these numbers will rise with climate change, she said.
Curbing climate change and UNICEFs top priority to protect and support the health, development and education of children are closely interlinked. Action to protect the environment will protect the basic rights of children, Ms. Johnson noted.
Ms. Johnson voiced hope that the UN Climate Change Conference in Bali, Indonesia, will produce a successful outcome.
Acknowledging that UNICEF does not have an environmental mandate, she said the agency nevertheless hopes that emissions reductions become a reality due to the detrimental impact of global warming on children.
The agency today also launched a new publication spotlighting the concerns of children and youth about climate change.
Entitled Climate Change and Children, it also outlines the dangers global warming poses to children in the form of food insecurity, deforestation, lack of energy infrastructure, increasing frequency and severity of natural disasters, disease and water scarcity.
Thank you, United Nations of Corruption!
Every time you think the UN can’t get worse, they outdo themselves.
“three million children under the age of five die from environment-linked diseases, such as diarrhoeal disease”
And they are so informative, too! Diarrhea is caused be global warming!
You can’t make this stuff up.
I gather that the images of polar bears sitting on icebergs, dead donkeys on the outskirts of the camps at Darfur, floods in Bangladesh, frog mutations and tales of penguins starving en masse just aren't hitting the spot anymore... SO IT'S GOT TO BE THE CHILDREN! Sorry UN. We're not buying what you're selling. We know it's a fraud!
One of the worst climates of modern times—the Mugabe environmental disaster in Zimbabwe.
And North Korea’s Seoulless environment.
Definitely unsuccessful UNinvolvements...
Malaria and other “tropical” diseases can be simply cured - IF the countries suffering those diseases had access to clean water and cheaper fuels, more food, and better fertilizer. More AC, better roads, trucks, bridges, and pipelines. Better sewers and water treatment plants.
Even Philadelphia suffered from cholera, yellow fever, and malaria early on. Northern Russia (in the 1920’s) suffered the worst known malaria outbreak ever.
Plants are growing now 12 - 23% MORE FOOD because of higher CO2 levels: More food equals better lives.
But the UN doesn’t want better lives.
Its actions shows it wants people dead, and third world corrupt dictators richer with bribes and corrupt energy policies.
Pass the barf bucket.
For every dollar given to these useless idiots, 75 cents goes to useless idiots in the UN. Yo! Fred. Want some traction? Get the UN out of the US. Expose these fools and you will win!
Three of the best props:
1. animals, preferably “cute” ones.
2. the elderly EXCEPT for euthanasia-related causes.
3. the chirren. best of the three.
global-pimp alert.
in the second tier are anyone and anything that is not a white male.
By creating the boogeyman of man-made climate change the UN diverts resources and world attention away the human crises its member states are too backward and corrupt to manage.
The Global Warming Suicide Cult (Don Feder: Its Really The Human Extinction Movement Alert>
Actually, I think they did make it up. Thats what makes it so funny. “GLOBAL WARMING WILL GIVE YOU DIARRHEA”. Every time I say it, it makes me laugh harder. Maybe I’ll make a bumper sticker out of that.
The title alone deserves a barf alert.
This needs a barf alert.
I grew up in Minnesota. I always thought summer was more fun than winter. Where was climate change when I could have used it?
When, over a 500-year period in the history of the planet, has what you call the "climate" NOT changed?
Isn't change in "climate" a consistent feature of our natural history?
