WASHINGTON The Lakota Indians, who gave the world legendary warriors Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, have withdrawn from treaties with the United States.
"We are no longer citizens of the United States of America and all those who live in the five-state area that encompasses our country are free to join us,'' long-time Indian rights activist Russell Means said.
A delegation of Lakota leaders has delivered a message to the State Department, and said they were unilaterally withdrawing from treaties they signed with the federal government of the U.S., some of them more than 150 years old.
The group also visited the Bolivian, Chilean, South African and Venezuelan embassies, and would continue on their diplomatic mission and take it overseas in the coming weeks and months.
Lakota country includes parts of the states of Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming.
The new country would issue its own passports and driving licences, and living there would be tax-free - provided residents renounce their U.S. citizenship, Mr Means said.
The treaties signed with the U.S. were merely "worthless words on worthless paper," the Lakota freedom activists said.

I’m stuned! I was almost certain that Russell Means had choked on his own vomit years ago.
I knew that was who this was about before I kliked on the post........
So the war is back on?
Doesn’t matter, they’ve insisted on remaining outside the ‘melting pot’ as if its a badge of honor.
Its not, its self inflicted destruction.
Reconquista?.....
Send ‘em back to where they came from.
“stop all Federal largesse”
How!
Puns aside, stop all forms of assistance. No more wellfare, no more nothing!
But only to those dumb enough to follow Chief Rusty Butt!
Means sees himself as the Lakota Arafat..........
I've heard that Canada is pretty this time of year.
“No problem. Begin taxing the Indian run casinos immediately.”
How could we tax the casino when it’s now in another country?
How can we dismantle the reservation now that it’s another country?
Tribesmen who live on the reservation should lose their US citizenship. The 14th amendment doesn’t protect citizens of a secessionist state. It was meant to protect the citizenship of former black slaves at a time the southenrn secession had beed defeated.
The dems won’t be able to rely on reservation vote fraud anymore.
This is a net plus.
Do I report my casino winnings as foreign investment income now?
Scouts out. Cavalry Ho!!!
(I knew it was a bad idea to give them injuns firewater)
Another libertarian candidate for president. 1984, I think.
I seem to recall we react poorly when seccesion comes up.....(chuckle)
Beyond that, the US actions in planning to recognize Kosovo against the sovereign status of Serbia and the UN's actions on the recognition of indigenous peoples could lead to an "interesting" future.
More serious than it seems at first. If other tribes follow it could get very wierd. I say withdraw the federal money and since they are in violation of the treaty take away their land.
Several of my GGG-Grandparents were Indian Fighters in Texas. I believe they did a wonderful job protecting their families and other settlers from attack although liberal history has not been kind to them. Today, these people should be considered criminals and treated as such. If they begin to try and forcibly impose their crazy ideas on the American populous they should be considered home-grown terrorist and dealt with severely.
Yep.
How many Lakotas? Demographics? Population???
Will they be recruiting Al Quaeda immigrants to join their ranks?
Feathered hijabs anyone?
I’m sorry, “these people” should refer to the Lakota Indians not to my GGG-grandparents. Emotive writing should be done slowly and with forethought, sometimes it makes me produce poor sentence structure.
