In addition to raising auto fuel efficiency standards 40 percent, an energy bill passed by Congress yesterday bans the incandescent light bulb by 2014.
President Bush signed the 822-page measure into law today after it was sent up Pennsylvania Avenue in a Toyota Prius hybrid vehicle. The House passed the bill by a 314-100 vote after approval by the Senate last week.

“Doubtful. Everyone hates low flush toilets, but were stuck with them.”
I keep hearing this bit the one I have works just as well as the two older ones. No double flushes. No difference. Except I save a little on water bills.
That said, mandating their use is stupid.
When it comes to energy policy, there is indeed little difference. They’ve all conspired against us to bring us high energy prices (oil, natural gas, electricity) and ever greater control of the choices available to us within the realm of energy usage. Fact is the politicians LIKE high energy prices! They don’t want us blockhead consumers making any choices. Hence, they leave me no other “choice” but to call them all a bunch of anti-freedom government bastards.
Don’t think so. It takes about 100 CFLs to equal the amount of mercury of ONE old thermometer. The world didn’t from that, and it won’t from this.
“CFLs are not expensive anymore.”
No CFLs in my house. The mercury is a hazard, the UV emissions are a hazard, and the light itself is a health hazard! Plus they won’t work with my dimmer switches.
LEDs are a possibility.
They last for 5 years under ‘normal’ use on average which is 3-4 hours a day. Like anything, there will be some that last longer and some shorter than the average. I’ve had normal bulbs die in 2 days before and others last over a year. In general though, you’ll get about 2,000 hours out of a normal bulb, and 8000 out of a CFL.
Doubtful. They don’t do that for a number of things they could also look for now.
I'd take that bet.
Why do you think Gore went up to California to talk with a bunch of venture capitalists?
First you pick a product that is in every home - then you arrange to make arrangements for a new one to replace it, then you buy up the early, entry stocks, then you get your Comrades in DC to pass a law prohibiting all others, and mandating everyone must buy your product....
I wish we had some real investigative reporters, one who look into who has stocks in these new bulbs - and one who would do a report on how much energy it's going to take to dispose of billions of hazardous-waste bulbs - not to mention the future super-cleanups one day from the millions of bulbs that WONT get taken to the hazardous waste centers but thrown in the household trash.
As for people thinking they saving money - you'll also have to pay for disposal.
This whole thing is blatant insanity - but we have become such a nation of sheep that all we do is cluck-cluck about these total breaches of the Constitution...instead of standing up and saying "NO! This you will not do!"
Yea, so now we have to flush twice, which defeats the whole purpose.
You left out one itty, bitty detail... MTBEs are carcinogenic...
The republican party is the stupid party. The democrat party is the evil party.

No CFLs in my house either. I refuse to knuckle under for these idiots. In fact, I’m going to go turn on a few extra lights in protest.
Good thing I have 12 ovens and 18 refrigerators to put bulb in.
Actually, it might be a good time to buy stock in the makers of our regular bulbs = because people are going to be stocking up like mad.
I know I am - but don't forget you will need todays lamps too - they are also going to mandate light fixtures restricted to take no more than a 60 watt bulb.
I will be the little ole granny sitting behind drawn shades, reading by my contraband bulbs.
My evidence is anecdotal, but significant, and I have found the claims of CFL life to be greatly exaggerated. Upon further reading, I’ve learned that they only last if you turn them on and leave them on. Ons and offs significantly reduce their lifespan.
CFLs are not expensive anymore. They are about a buck a piece.
I was listening to a home improvement radio show run by a plumber here in KC, and he said that the first generation low flow toilets were disasters. However newer designs do work. The key is that there was about a 3 year period where very few newly sold toilets took care of business on the first flush. Unfortunately there are still a lot of cheap toilets on the market that don't work properly. It actually took a redesign of the entire toilet, not just a smaller capacity tank. On the other hand, there are no problems with a lot of the newer, but more expensive toilets on the market.

not several per household to be broken by children and accidents.

They’re going to take away my TV before they take away my light bulbs and lamps, so I can’t even read by the light of the picture tube.
