CFLs are not expensive anymore. You can buy them for about a buck a piece now at Walmart, Costco, etc. They do last a lot longer and they do greatly reduce energy use.

That said, mandating their use is stupid.

No CFLs in my house. The mercury is a hazard, the UV emissions are a hazard, and the light itself is a health hazard! Plus they won’t work with my dimmer switches.

LEDs are a possibility.
