WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Congress, prodded by the deadliest shooting rampage in modern American history, passed legislation on Wednesday designed to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill.

Without objection, the Senate and House of Representatives approved the measure, which would bolster background checks for gun buyers, and sent it to President George W. Bush to sign.

1. All citizens of the US will be listed as crazy or mentally ill.

2. The Brady Center will be given the contract to decide who is not crazy with a simple test.

3. The test question...”How many bubbles are there in a bar of soap?”

Sarc/off

Federal law clearly prohibits the purchase of firearms by those who have been “adjudicated mentally defective” or “committed to a mental health institution.” Also forbidden from possessing guns are people who:

Are subject to a court order restraining them from domestic violence;

Are under indictment for, or have been convicted of a felony;

Are fugitives from justice;

Are users or addicts of controlled substances;

Have been convicted of a domestic violence misdemeanor
Have been dishonorably discharged from the military;

Are illegal aliens; or

Have renounced U.S. Citizenship.

Thanks for the link...

“These changes make a good bill even better. The end product is a win for American gun owners.”

That excerpt tells a lot.
Will keep reading, but on the surface it seems to suck.

Once conservativism is deemed unstable, they’ll be around to disarm us, or so they think.

From My Cold Dead Hand!!! There are some things that and some times that you have to draw a line in the sand. There are times when you have to stand up and be counted. There are times when you have to gather with your like kind and make a stand. That time is rapidly coming. Once the Marxist Dimocrats get into the White House and control the Congress at the same time, you can bet your last dollar, that they are going to declare EVERYTHING that they do not like, do not support, want to do away with, change, get rid of, they will do. The congress will pass it and the Dim prez will sign them. Then the war is on. They said the election of 2000 was so important, then 2004 was so very important, well this one is bigger. And I am afraid that we are going to lose it and lose it big. The Commissars are coming. Hillary or Obama will lead them.

When they come to disarm, they damn well better be armed themselves. I sure won’t give up my second amendment rights, without a -— fight. Amen.

Yep, they removed homosexuality some time ago. Wonder how they’ll handle the homosexual gun rights organization Pink Pistols?

Not sure if they removed anything else. The APA is nuts.

Of course he should have been allowed to have a gun. ...but I and my American brothers and sisters should all be allowed to openly carry without nanny-state infringement so that we could shoot his a$$ dead the minute he first pulled his piece.

This article provides absolutely no details. Will Bush sign? What was exactly in the bill? Direct link to the text of the bill? etc.

I can’t make any judgement about this bill yet although I join the many that see this as a mile-wide loophole.

Precisely.

I don't care what the NRA says. This is very bad legislation. If this is so good for gun owners then why has the Brady Campaign issued this.....they're claiming a win!

Brady Campaign Praises Congress for Action on Brady Background Checks

For Immediate Release:12-19-2007

Washington, D.C. – Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, issued the following statement:

“We commend the United States Congress for its action today to strengthen the Brady background check system.”

“The Virginia Tech killer was able to arm himself because the court order that should have blocked his gun purchase was not reported to the Brady background check system. This is why many of the families of those killed or injured on April 16 joined with us on October 16 to push for passage of this legislation.

“It is estimated that at least eight out of ten persons disqualified from buying guns for mental health reasons still have not had their records entered into the system, as well as one out of every four records of those convicted of felonies. As the Virginia Tech shootings show, the result of this ‘records gap’ can be fatal.

“Now that both the House and Senate have both approved the ‘NICS Improvement Amendments Act of 2007’ (H.R. 2640), we urge the President to sign this legislation to strengthen the Brady background check system. Every day that passes until this legislation becomes law, dangerous people will go into gun stores and not be blocked from buying deadly weapons, thus putting lives at risk.”

As the nation's largest, non-partisan, grassroots organization leading the fight to prevent gun violence, the Brady Campaign, with its dedicated network of Million Mom March Chapters, works to enact and enforce sensible gun laws, regulations and public policies. The Brady Campaign is devoted to creating an America free from gun violence, where all Americans are safe at home, at school, at work, and in our communities.

The Congress passed legislation banning 100-watt lightbulbs recently, and our President signed it into law today with great fanfare.

Think how easy it is to get someone declared “mentally ill”...

It can start with something as ordinary as getting suspended on FR.

That's why I can no longer edit my profile...

Crap. These guys were already in the liberal “system” of “mental health” and, as usual, it was all touchy-feely garbage.

There were enough signs around the VA Tech shooting only a bleeding heart moron, like the ones who dealt with him, would let them stay in society.

Grow A Pair America! Screw the “gun laws” and pack heat. Take out another nut job and LET THEM ARREST YOU! Watch the public come to your defense as they ride the idiots out of power.
