REPUBLICAN White House contender Mike Huckabee has refused to apologise after a rival accused him of insulting President George W. Bush by describing US foreign policy as "arrogant".
Mr Huckabee_butted heads with former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney after publishing an article calling for American foreign policy to change its "tone and attitude, open up, and reach out".
"The Bush administration's arrogant bunker mentality has been counterproductive at home and abroad," the former Arkansas_governor wrote in the journal Foreign Affairs.
"My administration will recognise that the United States' main fight today_does not pit us against the world but pits the world against the terrorists," said Mr Huckabee.
Mr Romney, who has seen Mr Huckabee surge past him in Iowa opinion polls-just three weeks before the first nominating contest there on January 3, expressed outrage at his rival's criticism of the Republican president.
"That's an insult to the President, and_Mike Huckabee should apologise to the President," Mr Romney told NBC television.
At a campaign stop in Iowa, Mr Romney said Mr Huckabee sounded more like one of the Democratic candidates_than a Republican.
"Well, did this come from Barack Obama or from Hillary Clinton? Did it come from John Edwards? No, it was one of our own," Mr Romney said.
"I can't believe he'd say that. I'm_afraid he's running for the wrong party. The truth of the matter is, this President has kept us safe these last six years," he said.
Mr Huckabee's record as governor of Arkansas and his statements have come under intense scrutiny in recent weeks as he has risen from underdog_status to top contender in the Republican race.
Last week, the ordained Baptist pastor, whose support among evangelical Christians has contributed to his rise in the polls, was forced_to apologise over comments he made about Mr Romney's Mormon religion.

What do you expect Huckabee’s a turd in a suite!
Huck writes his own speeches. It shows.
I believe the person that called Huckabee a prolife liberal was 100% on.
ditto.
I think that is Fred Thompson.
That person was Senator Fred Thompson. I hope all social conservatives who have been attracted to Huckabee’s campaign realize that he is neither a real conservative nor an electable candidate, and that Fred Thompson is both of those things and then some.
I’m willing to bet that Huckabee’s poll numbers will continue to drop!

I believe this guy is imploding. In any case, he appears to be a reincarnation of that other doofus, Jimmy Carter. Except for Duncan Hunter, Tom Tancredo and maybe Fred Thompson, this is a pretty weak response to a flaky bunch put up by the Dems.
Thank God President Bush has engaged that enemy, despite the howling and cries of the leftists, defeatists, enemy abettors, and faint hearted.
The best way to engage the terrorist Islamics and all those who support and abett them is the same way we engaged the Nazis and Imperialist Japanese...with bayonettes fixed and a willingness to take the fight to them and absolutely destroy their power base and the population centers that support them until they cry out in abject anguish for us to stop.
Only then will those radical islaics become "good" Muslims...and the apt message will be sent to the likes of the Red Chinese and Chavez and all other tinhorns as well.
How does that Larry King transcript invalidate the article (which, of course, I didn’t write, just posted FYI)?
You got that right. He isn't endearing himself to any real Republicans with this kind of nonsense. The Huckster is weak on foreign policy--not only on his grasp of the issues, but on his intestinal fortitude.
Actually - I think Huckabee is desperately trying to get that last handful of votes he thinks he needs to win Iowa - by trying to convert Ron Paul apostles and a few liberal Bush-haters...
Sounds like he’s trying to steal votes from Ron Paul.
This Huck campaign bothers me. I do not like what it has done to religion by making the Christian religion look like a quick, cheap tool for political gain. I really wish Huckabee would cut it out. It is doing great harm.
I also put the blame on the dopes that started out the 2008 race by pushing Rooty. They spent too much time telling the rest of the party to go to hell. Well, as a result, this silliness is what we get.
Too many mistakes in choices on our side, will give the most important office to one of the extremely lame Democrat contenders.
Lets wise up, pick a conservative for his stand on issues and ideas, get busy and do it asap.
