Huckabee on Christ Ad Brouhaha: 'Paul is Dead'
December 18, 2007 3:07 PM
ABC News' Kevin Chupka Reports: Former Governor Mike Huckabee, R-Ark., had some fun Tuesday answering a question about a brewing controversy over his latest TV ad called "What Really Matters."
Huckabee is running a Christmas ad in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina where the former Baptist minister invokes Jesus Christ -- the first 2008 Republican candidate to do so in a campaign ad.
In the ad Huckabee says that that at this time of year, "what really matters is the celebration of the birth of Christ and being with our family and our friends."
Some have suggested there is an image of a cross behind Huckabee's shoulder as he talks to the camera in the ad, but Huckabee dismissed that Tuesday.
"That was a book shelf behind me, a book shelf," Huckabee told reporters while campaigning in Houston, Texas.
Huckabee was asked if his language crossed the line between faith and politics: "Absolutely not," he said.
Huckabee went on to joke, to the delight of the reporters in the room, "I will confess this; if you play the spot backwards it says 'Paul is dead, Paul is dead, Paul is dead.'"
The Republican candidate likened the dissection of his Christmas campaign ad to rumors that Paul McCartney was killed in a car crash at the height of the Beatles popularity and replaced by a doppelganger, and that subtle clues were placed inside the group's music for years to come.

He may be a liberal but he isn't ashamed of being a Christian. In this politically correct era, I think he's stirred up something people agree with. Let's face it: if Christmas isn't about celebrating the birth of Jesus, then what is it all about? QFT.
No conservative should object to a Merry Christmas message.

The media's silly season is in full swing.Agreed. That's why January primaries are wrong. They are taking the Christmas season and replacing it with the silly season.

Some have suggested there is an image of a cross behind Huckabee's shoulder as he talks to the camera in the ad, but Huckabee dismissed that Tuesday. "That was a book shelf behind me, a book shelf," Huckabee told reporters while campaigning in Houston, Texas. A carefully placed "bookshelf".
In fact, in watching the ad, it appears that is wasn't an actual bookshelf, but flat backdrop of some sort. From what I see, the perspective of the shelf as the camera rotates doesn't change as it would with such a large movement behind Huckabee.

Catholic League president Bill Donahue said Huckabee went beyond wishing people a joyous holiday. Donahue said he was especially disturbed by the cross-like image created by a white bookcase in the background of the ad, saying he believed it was a subliminal message. What's the world coming to when the Catholic's are offended by an image of the cross? I doubt Donahue speaks for all Catholics.
I'm not on the Huckabee bandwagon, but I like the fact that he's not hiding his faith.

I take it to have a double meaning of referring to both Paul McCartney (the subject of the original urban legend) and Ron Paul (the subject of the current uproar).

Referring to Ron Paul? Amusing. I thought he was also referring to the other Paul (Saul of Tarsus). "Paul is dead, but Jesus lives," since he was discussing a Christmas ad.

I cant believe the latent anti Christian bigotry thats been exposed by a bookshelf in the background. The fact is, there would have not been a damn thing wrong with it if it HAD have been a cross.A real cross would have been find. The subliminal cross, from a candidate running as a "Christian leader" does grate on some people.

It wasn't that long ago that most stores in this country closed on Sunday to observe the Sabbath - now we're pissing our pants when someone says 'Christ' on TV without using it as a swear word and the shape of a bookshelf resembles a cross.
How sad.

Huckabee went on to joke, to the delight of the reporters in the room, "I will confess this; if you play the spot backwards it says 'Paul is dead, Paul is dead, Paul is dead.'" If you're gonna quote backwards music, at least get the quote right. It's, "Paul is a dead man." (Sounds more like, "Paul is a dead mon.
Are those delighted reporters like 18 or something? Weren't any of them alive and alert in '69?

I wondered the same thing. Why would Donahue place his politics over his religion at Christmas?

Big government, small government or anarchist: The ONLY reason the DBM is promoting Huckabee is because he is, indeed, the ultimate GOP candidate - FOR THE DEMOCRATS!!
