House Speaker Nancy Pelosi , D-Calif., admitted Thursday that she had underestimated the willingness of Republicans to stand behind President Bushs Iraq policy despite the drubbing the GOP took in the polls in 2006.
The assumption I made was that the Republicans would soon see the light, she said. Instead, the minority stuck to the presidents war policy in the face of unrelenting pressure from congressional Democrats and powerful lobbying campaigns by anti-war groups.
Bush has consistently refused to accept any limitations on his authority to direct military operations in Iraq, or on funds destined for the war effort. Democrats have been unable to muster enough votes to force him to accept a timetable for withdrawal of combat troops or a change in their mission in Iraq.
The grassroots are justifiably disappointed and I am too that we have not done more to end this war, Pelosi said.

Typical of libs in congress.
They only listen to the nuts in their district and themselves in DC.
If Nancy had driven away from GayFrisco or LA, she would have heard the real American people.
She tried to push the Dixie Chick Marketing strategy in Congress and that has turned around and bitten her botoxed bottom.
In her view, there is one side to every argument.
Who does this witch think she is?
The resolve of the GOP in Iraq is not the result of a “calculation”. It comes as a realization that defeat is not an option. Not everything is political Nancy.
No. She misunderestimated the American people's recognition that we must defeat and destroy the thug islamofascist terrorists, and she also misunderestimated the American military's courage, strength, skill, and determination.
The Democrats should recognize that Congresss is a quagmire! Pull out!
Hey Nancy......I possess something you will never have........... an IQ....
`Baghdad Nan, please pick-up the white courtesy phone or call Hanoi Jane. Baghdad Nan . . . “
And she’s ugly too.
You brought up an interesting angle (capitalist pig in disguise). Not a very good disguise if we can see it.
But it brings up the larger thing and that is liberal guilt. I suspect a lot of them are ‘greedy’ for power or money, but need to project a humble, ‘doing it for everyone else’ persona. It is darn tough to not be true to yourself, because it is very hard to lie to yourself when you know it’s not true (ie you still have a functioning conscience that reminds you you’re lying) without going certifiable.
The problem stems from the fact most of them believe that people start out inherently good, and become bad. They have inner conflicts because that doesn’t jive with how they currently feel about themselves (self loathing, etc) but at the same time they are pushing standards and encouraging steps to be taken that they know themselves they won’t do. Plus then having to act outraged if anyone calls them on anything close to resembling hypocracy, they won’t even debate things anymore and say ‘the time of discussion about ‘x’ is over.’
The self loathing comes from their belief that everyone starts out good - but they do a personal inventory and see how bad their motives are, andthe tactics they have to use to trick others to believing things, and wonder how they got so cynical. They either go nuts, or buy into the ‘end justifies the means’ concept, or get called on it at some point and have a breakdown, with or without a meaningful revelation.
I really believed she misread the American people. I see her getting more and more in the middle. She has been forced to govern in the middle. Interesting that this happened when we always think it happens with the Republicans.
Pelosi misjudged the determination of wackjob terrorists in Iraq, Afganistan, and in the DNC.
Kinda lets the cat out of the bag that the Dems would have done nothing after 9-11 except send money to New York State.
Probably because this calculation would have involved more than just the use of her ten fingers.
Pelosi completely misread the 2006 election, or she had also completely forgotten the Dem strategy during same. They ran CONSERVATIVE Democrats which beat LIBERAL Republicans that the right refused to return to the House again.
If Nancy saw this election as a mandate on Iraq, she should ask herself why there is no flooding of the phones/email when they have a vote on appropriation a la the “surge” that hit them when they tried to give illegals amnesty. They have no answer for that.
All Republicans have to do in the House seat elections this time is put up a picture of Nancy and Harry Reid and say “DO YOU REALLY WANT TWO MORE YEARS OF THIS??”
I was going to say that its amazing that this woman still doesnt get it: the War in Iraq is over; the good guys (US) won, the bad guys (al queda and Dems) lost. But, really, its more than amazing; its frigtening. To think that someone as obtuse and uneducable is the Speaker of the US House of Repesentatives should send chills up the spine of every freedom-loving American.
Because of your post, she will now claim victory on the war and will now demand to bring the troops home now. Please keep your post on among FRiends...thanks. lol.
This will be Nancy’s one and only leadership role. She will be voted out by Hoyer in 2008. I can almost see the democrats going around trying to get votes for different people already.
Pelosi and bin Laden thought they would have defeated America by now.
