[Ron] Paul Not Opposed To Same-Sex Marriage
The Bulletin ^ | 12/14/2007 | Joe Murray

Posted on 12/18/2007 5:29:12 AM PST by Sopater

Keeping true to his strict federalist view, GOP presidential hopeful Ron Paul told ABC's John Stossel gays should be allowed to marry.

"They can do whatever they want and they can call it whatever they want; just so they don't expect to impose their relationship on someone else," Dr. Paul stated.

The Texas Congressman added, "I would like to see all governments out of the marriage question. I don't think it is a state function; it is a religious function. There was a time when only churches dealt with marriage and they determined what it was. But 100 years or so ago, for health reasons, they claimed the state would protect us if we new more about our spouses and did health tests and had to get a license to get marriage. I don't agree with that."

Keyes Makes Rare Debate Appearance

While he has been systematically excluded from all of the mainstream presidential debates, Alan Keyes, the former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and conservative firebrand, was back in business during Wednesday's GOP Iowa debate. Mr. Keyes used the platform to discuss key moral issues, especially abortion.

"I would restore their moral sovereignty - it's something I think I can do very simply as president by declaring that no action taken by the executive branch would support, aid or abet anyone who is destroying the constitutional rights of those who are in the womb," stated Mr. Keyes.

The fiery orator further stated Rudy Giuliani would "abandon the heritage of the Republican Party" and he could not support the former New York City mayor if he became the party's nominee.

Thompson Applauds Florida Marriage Amendment

In light of the report that petitions favoring the Florida Marriage Amendment exceeded the number necessary to be placed on the Florida ballot next November, GOP presidential hopeful Fred Thompson pledged to support marriage as the union between one man and one woman.

"I strongly believe in the time-honored principle of marriage being a union between one man and one woman, the foundation of any civilized society," Mr. Thompson said. "I will appoint judges who apply the law, not make it up from the bench. We should not be held subject to judicially created social policy, and I will use the bully pulpit of the presidency to defend the institution of marriage."

"When someone reminds the populace of the true constitutional role of government....we don’t recognize it."

That is a steaming pile of bullshit.

Ron Paul is an America blaming, Cindy Sheehan moonbat.

I couldn't care less if he has similar views to mine on anything else.

Marriage is treated as a civil contract because the courts decide property settlements and child custody cases.

How would he handle these matters if marriage ceased to exist as a civil contract?

Civil contracts are made, recorded, and adjudicated by courts for every possible activity, such as installing a new bathroom in your home. So far as the government is concerned, any marriage contract can be made subject to the same rules.

Anyone who wants to blame America for everything that goes wrong in the world, or is more interested in surrendering to the terrorists than winning the WOT is not motivated by a sense of responsibility. He is just a coward.

Trekkies and Star Wars enthusiasts?

We hosted exactly this type of marriage in our backyard on one occasion, for friends of ours. At the time we lived next to an Embassy Suites, at which the ceremony had been arranged. At the last minute the hotel canceled, so the wedding and a hundred guests moved over to our place.

And yes, the couple is still together.

He was in fact quoting Sinclair Lewis. He said it in resonse to a question about Huckabee’s Christianity. I thought it particularly nasty to suggest that Huckabee was a fascist...even though I don’t support him.

In response to your comment.....please give ONE example where Christianity led to Fascism. I know for a fact that both German & Italian Fascist states were definitely anti-christian.

Ok, fair enough.

I listen to Ron Paul and I don’t see an America blaming candidate at all.

I think what he is referring to when it comes to foreign policy....stop playing world cop.

I don’t think we should exit from the world stage totally, but it does appear we are entering conflicts via executive order rather than declaration of war by congress layed out in the constitution.

True, the president has the authority to send troops if need be, but after a period of time, are we not obligated as a nation to declare the conflict a war if we channel the resources that we have in a conflict such as Iraq?

Seems to me the executive branch has figured out a way to violate the sovereignty of a nation w/o a declaration of war.

Two different timing situations. Weren't Germany and Italy Christian states just before going into fascism? Was there a time from 400-1976 when Italy was not Catholic with the church reviewing laws and Catholic teachings codified in civil law?

Shall I rewind the tape on Ron Paul and have you "listen" to it again?

Certainly. Have a link? I don’t just take someones word, show me proof.

Most of the time people pull little quips out of context and try to define a persons character.

I’m trying to give the guy the benefit of the doubt, not just rush to some conclusion because a few call him a nut.

I thought it particularly nasty to suggest that Huckabee was a fascist...

He NEVER said Huckabee was a fascist. He was asked to comment on Huck's ad and was reluctant to do so. When pressed for an opinion about using religious images in political ads he quoted Lewis. Smirkin' Steve Doocy responded to what Ron Paul said as if he called Huckabee a fascist.

Ron Paul was on 3 morning shows today, Fox and Friends, CNN, and MSNBC. FOX and (friends of Rudi) asked the stupidest questions, and conducted the least professional interview of all three.

Ron Paul: ""Christians and Patriots cause Fascism"
" Weren't Germany and Italy Christian states just before going into fascism?"

Your response totally misses the point. The entire western world - including those who opposed the fascists - were Christians, and Ron Paul was responding to Huckabee candidacy as a Christian.

Neither Hitler or Mussolini ran or governed as Christians and they were both anti-Christian. In fact, Mussolini as a child was not baptized but banned from church for throwing stones at the congregation and was often opposed by the Vatican as a ruler. Hilter disdained Christianity and often spoken of his admiration for Islam. (I can provide citations.)

Here is the most recent one

mnehrling: How many different links do we have referring Ron Paul to blaming America, for this or that?

I'm finding new ones from as late as the Univision debate, but thought you may have some cached.

I was giving an examples of where fascism arose out of Christian cultures. The issue isn’t the religion of the leader, but how did this happen in those two countries where Christianity was the dominant religion. And in Italy the church teachings were particularly influential over laws and customs. I think that’s one reason Muss was a little slow to act on the genocide issue.

according to his interview this morning on FOX news, Christians and Patriots cause Fascism.

Oh brother, did you hurt yourself twisting his quote that far out of context?

That says absolutely nothing. All modern philosophies of government - fascism, communism, democracy, anarchism, libertarianism - "arose out of Christian cultures."

The entire modern world "arose out of Christian cultures"... which is not the point Paul was making or you are attempting to defend. The Paulestinian point is that there is something uniquely found in Christianity and Patriotism that leads specifically to Fascism - which is the same point/lie made by the Left.
