Keeping true to his strict federalist view, GOP presidential hopeful Ron Paul told ABC's John Stossel gays should be allowed to marry.
"They can do whatever they want and they can call it whatever they want; just so they don't expect to impose their relationship on someone else," Dr. Paul stated.
The Texas Congressman added, "I would like to see all governments out of the marriage question. I don't think it is a state function; it is a religious function. There was a time when only churches dealt with marriage and they determined what it was. But 100 years or so ago, for health reasons, they claimed the state would protect us if we new more about our spouses and did health tests and had to get a license to get marriage. I don't agree with that."
Keyes Makes Rare Debate Appearance
While he has been systematically excluded from all of the mainstream presidential debates, Alan Keyes, the former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and conservative firebrand, was back in business during Wednesday's GOP Iowa debate. Mr. Keyes used the platform to discuss key moral issues, especially abortion.
"I would restore their moral sovereignty - it's something I think I can do very simply as president by declaring that no action taken by the executive branch would support, aid or abet anyone who is destroying the constitutional rights of those who are in the womb," stated Mr. Keyes.
The fiery orator further stated Rudy Giuliani would "abandon the heritage of the Republican Party" and he could not support the former New York City mayor if he became the party's nominee.
Thompson Applauds Florida Marriage Amendment
In light of the report that petitions favoring the Florida Marriage Amendment exceeded the number necessary to be placed on the Florida ballot next November, GOP presidential hopeful Fred Thompson pledged to support marriage as the union between one man and one woman.
"I strongly believe in the time-honored principle of marriage being a union between one man and one woman, the foundation of any civilized society," Mr. Thompson said. "I will appoint judges who apply the law, not make it up from the bench. We should not be held subject to judicially created social policy, and I will use the bully pulpit of the presidency to defend the institution of marriage."

I'm fairly dissappointed with the GOP choices. I still think that Duncan Hunter is the best choice over all.
Duncan Hunter and Tom Tancredo both pass the strictest constitutional muster. Ron Paul is a moonbat.
Marriage is treated as a civil contract because the courts decide property settlements and child custody cases.
How would he handle these matters if marriage ceased to exist as a civil contract?
I guess we need the Gov’t to make if official. How will society survive if the Gov’t does not bless it?

It's simple. When you go into court the judge goes "OK let's see your contract". What standardized civil marriage has done is to create a mandatory non-negotiable contract that no one knows the terms of until they get into divorce court and the judge makes them up.

People have become so accustomed to having gov’t involved in our lives, they can’t imagine what it would be without it, just like prisoners who aren’t prepared for freedom when they leave jail.
For once, someone has nailed this issue. You can’t tell me you honestly support a Marriage Amendment. If so, why not pass and Amendment for every other thing we dislike in society?

Of course if you can somehow prove that marriage, and the definition thereof, isn't in the 'ordinary course of affairs' concerning the 'lives, liberties, and properties' of the people I'll be more than happy to listen to why the federal government should be involved in every moral issue that 'conservatives' want it to be in. Screw the kids, I'm a libertarian. Its none of your business if homosexuals want to raise children. Children are not rights-bearing individuals. Marriage contracts are not designed at least in part, to protect the interests of children. Even if they were, children do not have a right to be raised by their mother and father. If two cows, a turkey, and lawnmower want to get together and raise children, let them. Yes I'm being sarcastic.
LOL. I realize reading may beyond some but he was quoting Sinclair Lewis. It was a general statement but history has proven that also to be the case before.
