Singer-songwriter Dan Fogelberg, famed for the soaring vocals and elegant instrumentation of tunes such as "Longer" and "A Love Like This," died on Sunday, three years after being diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. He was 56.

A whole lot of others used Shel’s tunes, too. “A Boy Named Sue” was one of his.
Just damn!
RIP, Dan, and thanks for the music.
Great words, and the sound of the music just hits me right. You know what makes Hard to Say so good? Glenn Frey’s background vocal. If you can get him or Michael McDonald to sing backup for you, you’re gold.
Those are two of my all-time favorite ssongs, by anybody, and it'll hurt knowing he's goen whenever I hear them.
“Longer” was OUR song.
Longer than there’ve been fishes in the ocean
Higher than any bird ever flew
Longer than there’ve been stars up in the heavens
I’ve been in love with you
Stronger than any mountain cathedral
Truer than any tree ever grew
Deeper than any forest primeval
I am in love with you
I’ll bring fire in the winters
You’ll send showers in the springs
We’ll fly through the falls and summers
With love on our wings
Through the years as the fire starts to mellow
Burning lines in the book of our lives
Though the binding cracks and the pages start to yellow
I’ll be in love with you
I’ll be in love with you
I am in love with you
Thirty some years ago I was introduced to his music by a long lost love. I have relisten occasionally and his music and its associations can bring me to a level of emotion that is hard to accept. I am so sad that he has gone.
Hubby heard him tell this story about “Same Old Lang Syne”.
While the story was / is true, Fogelberg was challenged to
write a song using the melody to the William Tell Overture.
Think about it.
Phoenix was great; Longer, the best love song ever; and Language of Love was pretty good, too.
He raised the bar for everyone, musically, poetically. Had no idea he was even sick.
Man...saw a picture of Neil Young the other day...he looks like age itself...
an era isn't just coming to an end, it's disappearing.
My Doc says the blood test is fine but not 100%. That, AND the other tests is the way to go.
Funny how that happens, isn't it?
I know I’ve heard the song, but was never a fan of his stuff so I can’t really place it. Even without the excesses some of these guys bring along - and Fogelberg didn’t seem to be one of the boozy/druggie guys at all - so many die way too young. The road’s tough on a person.
He's right. PSA's a very accurate tumor marker, but it's not very definitive. Lots of benign conditions can elevate it, and sometimes it's falsely low. Three years from diagnosis to death means he was either well advanced when diagnosed, or had an aggressive form of PC.
Yes, it certainly is. They just don't make songwriters any longer...and that rap crap isn't music...it's just crap...it doesn't touch the soul, lift you up, bring you to places; it's nothing to feel anything about, except irritated after awhile.
Such a shame.
That’s a real shame. He made some great music! Prayers go out for his loved ones.
I traveled with a musical group from the age of 15.
Then hubby and I traveled for three years when we
first got married. We did the whiskey clubs back
in the 70’s when they had dance floors in the dinner
houses.
Traveling is an AWFUL life. Nearly broke up our
marriage. But... we just celebrated our 32nd.
I still have a recording company.
I live in Nashville and we have plenty of songwriters, many of us writing great stuff. It’s tough to get recorded, though. If anybody wants to hear the latest song I can’t get “cut”, do a private reply with an e-mail address and I’ll send an mp3.
I agree with you about Dan and Jackson Browne being the best poets in the business! My loyalty remained steadfast to them both all through these years- since the early 70s.
Dan’s music, tho, was what really got me through some hard times...some bad depressions... I would put on 2-3 LPs and let the music soothe my spirit! I can honestly say there is not one song of Dan’s that didn’t touch me! No other music before or since has touched me the way Dan’s music did and always will.
I was looking forward to my 12th concert to see Dan when it came out about him having advanced prostate cancer- and would cancel the tour that was planned. I was davastated then-and am heartbroken today to hear that it has finally ended for Dan... Dan, our wonderfully talented poet/musician, with the angel voice; who gave us all so much!
RIP- sweet Dan!
[...They just don’t make songwriters any longer...]
I disagree. There are some incredibly talented
writers and vocalists out there now publishing
their own stuff and doing really well. The record
company’s aren’t the boss anymore. The industry
has changed and people can now decide what they
like instead of being told what to like. Finally.
