Dubbed "America's Most Scenic Highway" in 1967 by Parade Magazine, the Greenies and their hand-puppets in Albany want to keep the Adirondack Northway (I-87) that way, despite it being a major thoroughfare between the US and Canada. Why should they worry about a few (frozen) dead motorists when those dastardly cell-phone towers might ruin the scenery?

I am ambivalent about the cellphone towers. Are we so helpless in the cell phone era that we can’t be expected to put emergency equipment in our cars when driving in rural areas the winter?

And Spitzer may be the worst governor in the US. He certainly is the craziest.

I’ve driven around on various major roads (including I-87) in Westchester County and have noticed at least a couple of cell towers that look like trees.Why can’t they use these in the areas in question.

I never leave home during the winter without adequate clothing to survive for extened periods without an external heat source no matter how far I’m driving. You can’t plan how far from help you’re going to be if you have an accident.

There are towers that pretty closely resemble trees. There's one on RT. 2 in Harvard, Mass. (30 miles west of Boston, not the University.) The guy that did the survey for Verizon was a Harvard resident.

As a side note, there is a cell tower on the northern shores of Lake Coeur d'Alene, highlighted against the sky, that has been made in the shape of a tree to conceal its true identity. Problem is, it is about three times the height of the surrounding trees.

As another side note (though certainly connected to the above), the only verbiage I would ever consider for a bumper sticker is "I hate sh*theads." It seems to cover all eventualities.

I live in Vermont, and it gets cold here.

We live in a cell free area, and can’t use a cell phone until we drive about five miles toward Montpelier. I don’t carry a cell phone anyway, I gave mine to one of my kids in college.

I make it a rule never to go out in my car without enough warm clothes and boots to survive a hike, if necessary. I should think that was also an obvious rule for upstate New York. You don’t have to wear all the stuff while you drive, but have it in the car.

I lived 43 miles from the nearest McDonalds in the north country before there was any device called a “cell phone”. The locals told me what to carry in a vehicle in case there was an accident in the winter. Flares. Coffee can. Matches. Lighters. Blankets. Water. Beans and a can opener. They said to use a flare to burn the spare tire, if need be.

The idea that because a technology exists, people will stop being reckless is just not realistic. People are going to die no matter how much you to try to prevent it.
