LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Two members of a radical Islamic group accused of plotting to attack US military, Israeli and Jewish facilities in California pleaded guilty to terrorism charges Friday, justice officials said.
Kevin James, who formed the extremist group while in a California prison, and Levar Washington, who was recruited by James, pleaded guilty to conspiring to wage war against the United States, the US Attorney's Office announced.
Washington, 28, and James, 31, were among four men indicted in 2005 for their alleged roles in a plot to attack American military facilities, Israeli government offices and synagogues in the Los Angeles area.
James and Washington appeared before a court in Santa Ana Friday to enter their pleas, justice officials said.
Prosecutors said that a third man, Gregory Patterson, was expected to plead guilty to a charge of conspiracy to commit terrorism on Monday.
The fourth member of the group, Hammad Samana, had been deemed unfit to stand trial and was currently receiving psychiatric care at a federal prison, the US Attorney's Office statement said.
James, Washington and Patterson face sentencing hearings in March and April, prosecutors said.
Justice officials said James formed a group dubbed Jam'iyyat Ul-Islam Is-Saheeh, or JIS, while in jail.
Although there was no evidence of any links to Al-Qaeda or other foreign Islamic extremist groups, the accused men had adopted their cause, FBI Director Robert Mueller said in a statement.
"These home-grown terrorists had raised the money, recruited the people, chosen the targets, obtained the weapons and set the date," Mueller said. "All they had left to do was to strike."
Prosecutors said James founded the group in 1997 while in prison and enlisted Washington in late 2004.
Washington then recruited Patterson and Samana upon his release.
While Washington and Samana carried out a string of armed robberies on gas stations to raise funds for the group, Samana began choosing targets which included Los Angeles International Airport and the Israeli Consulate as well as army recruitment centers.

Homegrown terrorists, string them up by their ankles and slit their throats.
I supspect there will be more of these homegrown sympathizer type attacks. If we keep getting hung juries like they had in the Chicago incident it will probably take a few sucessful attacks before most Americans begin to realize what most Freepers already know...these folks are at war with America whether we are at war with them or not.
So be prepared for terror for the next few decades
