Let's keep religion out of the presidential campaign, if possible.
I say, to each his own. Let's rejoice that the founding fathers established a secular nation and that no one has to publicly defend his or her beliefs.
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney -- put on the defensive because of his Mormon faith -- recently felt compelled to explain his religion to skeptical voters.
So he tore a page out of John F. Kennedy's 1960 campaign appearance before a group of Protestant ministers in Houston.
At the time, Kennedy, a Roman Catholic, had to dispel rumors that he would be taking orders from the Vatican if he won the presidency.
Kennedy assured the protestant clergy that the pope would have no place in his presidency. He won the day when he told the ministers that when his brother Joe Kennedy's plane disappeared over the English channel during World War II, no one asked what his religion was.
Last week, Romney delivered his religion speech at the George H.W. Bush Library at College Station, Texas, and pledged he would not allow any authorities of the Mormon church "exert influence" on his presidential decisions. "I will serve no one religion," he declared.
Romney is in a tough fight for the GOP presidential nomination with former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a Baptist minister, and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
Huckabee is tough on illegal immigrants -- but in the past favored schooling for their children.
A conservative, Huckabee opposes abortion and, at one time, wanted to isolate HIV/AIDS patients. He also supports a federal ban on gay marriage and advocates teaching creationism alongside evolution in schools.

MIDI - TEDDY BEARS PICNIC 1st version
She's more than 50 years past her prime
I can't believe she's still breathing
She'll really cause you to lose your lunch
when I hear her I start seething
Now Rummy says that he's had enough
with Helen Thomas he will get rough
Today's the day the troll is thrown from the White House
She has a dress that she wished was stained while Sinkmaster was there playing
She towed the line and was on her knees
no unkind word was she saying
Now Rummy says that he's had enough
with Helen Thomas he will get rough
Today's the day the troll is thrown from the White House
It is gonna be wonderful
that a woman who's full of bull
Will be picked up and carried out
for this we've been waiting for years
It has really been sickening
she has acted like Bill was king
It will be such a pleasure to see Helen thrown out on her big rear
It is gonna be wonderful
that a woman who's full of bull
Will be picked up and carried out
for this we've been waiting for years
It has really been sickening
she has acted like Bill was king
It will be such a pleasure to see Helen thrown out on her big rear
Reporters wait, and when Rummy's through, the old bat starts her inquiry
She's never seeming to make much sense
and everyone's growing weary
Now Rummy says that he's had enough
with Helen Thomas he will get rough
Today's the day the troll is thrown from the White House
Each reporter starts to cheer
they know that this will be a blessed relief
the end is near
They've been burdened far too long
and no one's gonna miss her when she's finally gone
They knew that the gig was up when she was whining about things at Guantanamo
She cared about the terrorist treatment
and so the question's asked
why wasn't this done nine years ago
Each reporter starts to cheer
they know that this will be a blessed relief
the end is near
They've been burdened far too long
and no one's gonna miss her when she's finally gone
They knew that the gig was up when she was whining about things at Guantanamo
She cared about the terrorist treatment
and so the question's asked
why wasn't this done nine years ago
You are so right. We have a freedom of religion but not freedom from religion. That is what our Founding Fathers established!
Reagan built a winning coalition on the all-American concept that government should be kept out of our wallets and out of our way in general.
Oh, a free hint: Put at least two sentences of padding between mutually exclusive assetions. That maintains at least a pretense of respect for your readers' intelligence.
anytime we decide to study veterinary medicine and need an example of advanced hemorrhoids in camels someone can post her photo
Lets keep Helen Thomas out of politics....horrid old witch.
Thank god for small favors!
“Have you noticed the good number of conservatives siding with Helen on this issue (Noonan, Lowry, etc.)?”
They’re doing that, because they’re terrified of Huckabee getting the nomination. And they should be. A Huckabee nomination would be the most crushing defeat since Barry Goldwater in 64.
Reagan built a winning coalition on the all-American concept that government should be kept out of our wallets and out of our way in general.
Reagan built a winning coalition by appealing to socially conservative, primarily (but certainly not exclusively) Southern conservative Democrats who crossed party lines and began voting GOP in large numbers. This much is historical fact which only the blinkered would even bother to deny. The GOP already preached keeping the government out of our wallets - and we see how well that did them between Eisenhower and Reagan. The only Republican who managed to get elected President was Nixon, and that only because he began (but didn't consummate) the Southern strategy. At the Congressional level, "moderate" Republicanism gave us strong majorities of Democrats in both Houses. The one candidate who gave us the brand of "libertarian Republicanism" that you seem to advocate was Goldwater - and we see how well he did (though, admittedly, campaigning on the promise to nuke North Vietnam probably didn't help him much). When Reagan combined the Goldwater-esque fiscal libertarianism with the social conservatism held by the majority of Americans (even if it is not the biggest set of issues for many of them), Reagan won big where Goldwater fell way, way flat.
This all is fact. Poll after poll after poll shows that majorities, often LARGE majorities of Americans hold conservative views on many, many social issues. You can wear your blinders all you like, but the fact remains that social conservatism is the winning leg of the Republican strategy. I certainly can't see how dispossessing a third of the electorate of its party is going to help that party win elections.
One free hint of my own: The term "socialism" encompasses more than just fiscal liberalism. You may want to invest in some books for reading.
Thanks! One thing that really ticks me off is the way these infantile “libertarian Republicans” are all gung-ho to destroy 40 years of careful coalition building which has resulted in (until the media war spin) a winning electoral strategy, all because their overactive imaginations envision that somebody, somewhere in the conceivable future, might possibly want to take away their nudie books.
I would not expect a man to restrain his faith. In fact, if his faith did not govern his policy decisions, I would have to say that faith is rather shallow.
Having said that, I don't see what impact on governmental policy a belief that Jesus and satan are brothers would have. I have policy reasons for not voting for Mitt, and it would seem to me those policies of his would be in conflict with the Mormon faith, not in line with it.
Moreover, if a mans faith teaches that he is obliged to share such faith and correct those in error, why would the dictates of civility take precedence over this duty?
If you are refering to Huck's comments, he is free to correct Mitt privately. But he should not do so publically, especially 'third party' through a reporter.
I kind of thought the photo reminded me of something from the Lord of the Rings— pretty scary regardless.
Ug! I thought FR had a no troll rule.
How bout we keep ugly ignorant biyotches out of journalism?
