Raleigh — A state audit has found that hundreds of people have used bogus Social Security numbers to obtain food stamps.
From July 2002 to last April, 1,906 people were receiving food stamps from the state Department of Social Services based on invalid Social Security numbers, the audit report stated. Another 1,237 food stamp recipients were using the Social Security numbers of dead people, according to the audit.
DSS security measures had previously disqualified 5,840 people from the food stamp program after determining they were using phony Social Security numbers, according to the audit.
The error rate was much less than 1 percent, which is an acceptable level, the audit report stated.

Once again, one of the very big reasons why entitlement budgets are 40% more than they should be......total BS from the Hunt Machine and the Liberal March toward socialism.
87,000 out of 452,000 population are collecting food stamps? That’s like 20% of every man, woman and child.
But the 20% represent households, with an average household at the poverty level of 3.5 then the number of county households at large becomes ~132,000 which could represent 65% of households?
The numbers on your link don’t add up or I have misread this.
It’s maddening. The other day I was paying for purchases at the grocery store at one of four self-service terminals. The other three people around me all paid with Pennsylvania Access cards. All three were apparently able-bodied adults in their 20s or 30s, one of them a white male.
You feel more and more like a sucker all the time for actually working and contributing to society.
I’m old enough to remember when food stamps were actually, well, food stamps. Put another way there was a stigma associated with using them.
Now (I assume) “food stamps” are now Katrina style debit cards so not stigma, no muss, no fuss.

That actually happened to me and was the beginning of my own irritation with all this. When I was first married we drove a car we paid $54 for. We were on a strict budget and had gone grocery shopping. Ahead of us in line was a man who had the belt full of the best meats and seafood. I whispered to my husband ...wow he sure isnt on a budget. He pulled out food stamps to pay for his groceries. Thats not what riled me though. With that I just shook my head sadly, knowing how hard we were both working. However he was still in the parking lot putting all his groceries into the trunk of his brand new shiny Trans Am. Thats when I got angry.
Why aren’t they simply arresting these people for fraud when the come to pick up their next check/stamp?
Screw the abled bodied person collecting food stamps. Let them starve. The schools have free lunch programs. Unless someone is physically or mentally handicapped, no food stamps.
Actually, in NC, they probably *are* illegal aliens. This state is the most illegal-friendly state in the entire South. Here in Durham we are effectively a sanctuary city, and the mayor and entire city council that supported it were re-elected last month.
NC has a very strong agricultural industry lobby, and the ag industry fights tooth and nail to keep from giving up their cheap illegal labor. Combine that with a Rat administration (whose Governor fully supports illegals being able to attend state colleges) and you get what we’re calling “Carolina del Norte.” We’re drowning in illegal immigrants, and I have no doubt that when Georgia cracks down on their big illegal population, they’ll largely come here, where they will be welcomed with open arms, drivers’ licenses, community college educations, and slave-wage jobs slaughtering hogs and chickens.

It cannot be true that there is even a remote possibility they are illegal aliens. Remember, they are much better people than regular Americans who are lazy and selfish. Immigrants who come here with a document deficit have the kind of family values that would preclude them cheating the system. You know that.

No such luck, melacholy - they just stole someone else's ID. They need those food stamps so they can eat free off our tax dollar, and send the saved money to their familias in Mexico.

Trust me, nic - they aren’t without food stamps for more than five minutes. In fact, it has been reported that the first thing the illegal immigrants do, when they get accross our (open) border, is sign up for food stamps, within three hours, with the help of a guy waiting behind the scenes. And for a price, he’ll even get them a social security card and a fake green card.
