N.J. Legislature Votes To Repeal Death Penalty Corzine Expected To Sign Into Law
POSTED: 4:44 pm EST December 13, 2007 NEW YORK -- New Jersey's legislature has become the first in the nation to repeal the death penalty, since the US Supreme Court first allowed its reinstatement in a landmark ruling 31 years ago.
Following a State Senate vote Monday to repeal New Jersey's law, the Assembly has now followed suit on a 43 to 36 vote.
WNBC.com's Brian Thompson reports that Governor Corzine is expected to sign the repeal into law early next week.
For opponents of the death penalty, New Jersey's action is seen as the launch of a movement to repeal similar laws in other states, many of which have considered such a step, but whose legislatures have declined to act.
