Fred Thompson Wins, Hands Down (Freds' "I paid for this microphone" moment)
American Spectator ^ | 12/12/2007 | Philip Kline

Posted on 12/12/2007 2:30:09 PM PST by JRochelle

First, let me say that this was by far the worst debate yet. The questions were not only skewed to the left, not only almost entirely neglected foreign policy, but they were so broad as to allow the candidates to fall back on talking points. Also, there was no room for back and forth between the candidates. Absolutely awful.

With that said, Fred Thompson was the only candidate who stood out. He was funny, charming, and peppy. Here was a guy who wasn't afraid to speak hard truths, and who displayed knowledge of the policy issues--especially on entitlements. But the moment of the debate, the moment that will be talked about should he defy expectations and go on to win the nomination, was when he refused to raise his hand at the behest of the moderator. This demonstrated conviction, showed he was able to stand up for his principles, that he was a man who valued substance, a leader rather than a follower, and somebody who is running a different kind of campaign. In short, today Thompson was everything that conservatives had hoped they'd be getting when he announced his candidacy.

Thanks for that explanation - didn’t see the debate and was wondering what the hand thing was about! (Are they re-airing it tonight anywhere?)

More and more Thompson is the one.

The Iowa voters even told Luntz they are all now for Romney!

Didn't happen. Not "all."

I saw two people (or three) saying he was too slippery, like a salesman.

Mitt seems too slick to me, so slick as to be creepy even. Sorry, Mitt fans. It’s the vibe I continually get.

Fred and Mitt, what a great GOP team that will be!(Although not necessarily in that order).

Nope, Fred won't choose Mitt for his veep if he's smart, and he is.

Thompson-Hunter, what a great CONSERVATIVE team that will be!!

Yep, great team is the right phrase for that pairing, and in either order. (Although I would prefer Hunter-Thompson if I had my druthers)

When anyone talks about Romney, they lead of with some kind of qualifier about his being a morman. Nobody else is given that kind of treatment. McLame is a freemason, which is almost exactly the same as a mormon, but nobody has bugged him about it, and Julie-Annie is basically a false catholic that supports abortion, and he gets a pass.

If religion is an issue, it should be a universal one.

Fred’s best moment in this debate was when he asked, “Who do you want sitting on our side representing you? That ought to be who you elect president.”

Asking someone to visualize like that is very, very effective. One pictures it, and it truly is worth a thousand words.

(Especially picturing Fred across from the Iranian cockroach Ahmadinejad!)

Charles Krauthammer on the Fox News Rountable: "That wasn't the worst debate of this primary season. That was the worst debate in history going back to the Greek Era". Which caused the rest of the panel to burst out laughing.

“And they all laughed at how stupid the debate was because of the moderator and the lack of substantive questions.”

It will be interesting to see how she does with moderating the DEM debate tomorrow. Nice soft questions, probably. Especially to Hillary.

He can also finish second if Huckabee takes a hit and finishes third

That isn't happening because Huckabee has a hold on the Evangelical vote and that isn't going to change.

Thompson's best shot is to clear Romney and Giuliani out of the way.

Sort of refreshing and feels good that Fred is coming to life so to speak.

The old gal who was asking the questions seemed like to me to represent what a good hard nosed commie might resemble or a Democrat babe.

The old gal certainly was not a candidate to be a Republican trophy wife unless it is the opinion of a Democrat Lesbian stalker.

I could tell Fred did not like her and he did not seem to care that his feelings of disdain were showing through.

Sometimes I think Mort has eaten way to many of those little round green pills found on the bottom of most rabbit cages.

Surely he can not be as dumb as he acts at times.
