U.S. House okays resolution recognizing Christianity, Christmas (How sad this was felt necessary!)

Thanks to the efforts of an Iowa congressman, Christmas and the Christian faith are receiving the same congressional recognition afforded other religions.

Representative Steve King (R-Iowa) is pleased that his Christmas resolution, recognizing the importance of Christmas and the Christian faith, was able to pass on Tuesday night with bipartisan support. H. Res. 847 passed on a 372-9 vote, all "nay" votes coming from Democrats. Ten House members (nine Democratic) voted "present."

The Iowa lawmaker says the resolution follows two similar bills honoring both the Hindu and the Islamic religions and their respective holidays.

"Watching Congress honor Islam during Ramadan, and also Diwali, which is a Hindu holiday, brought it home to me that we were doing that and not honoring Christianity," King shares. "I'm Christian by faith and most of us are in Congress." As are the majority of Americans, three-fourths of whom King says identify themselves as Christians.

"This nation has about 225 million Christians out of the 300 million, and about two billion Christians throughout the world," he states. "And the foundations of this nation are a Christian foundation [and] our founders were Christian. So for us to move forward towards Christmas without honoring Christ is, I think, a great omission, especially if we're going to honor other religions."

The text of the resolution recognizes the Christian faith as "one of the great religions of the world," and acknowledges the role played by Christians and Christianity in the founding of the United States and the formation of Western civilization.

King says it was important to get the resolution passed because Congress is scheduled to adjourn very soon for the Christmas recess and will not return until mid-January. He also indicates he is pleased that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi did not try to stop a vote on the bill.

When it has to come to a house vote to honor Christmas and Christians in America then it's time for true Christians to get off their backsides and take charge!

Here's who voted nay:

Ackerman Clarke DeGette Hastings (FL) Lee McDermott Scott (VA) Stark Woolsey

Do you know the name of the Republican that voted “Present”?

It seems the same Congressmen who voted against the Christmas resolution voted for one recognizing Ramadan. Link

I’m very relieved. Christianity does exist and so does Christmas. But for our legislators, we might never have known.

Why do we light up the Empire State Building with green light to honor Ramadan without hesitation, but it needs to be brought to a vote whether to even RECOGNIZE Christmas??? We’re voting on whether to recognize the Christian faith and its followers?? This sounds vaguely Shariah-esque...almost as if we were to be declared in a state of dhimmitude were it decided that Christianity was not an acceptable faith.

Most of us on this forum have had a bellyful of negativism as regards Jesus Christ and Christianity.

If I were king....

Pelosi is reading the poll numbers as well.

Why is that the atheist and the anti-Christian bigots expect to take Sundays, Christmas, and Easter off work?. Why not just make it another work day for this group?

China and Africa are probably the more likely spots. It may not show now, but there are huge revivals going on in both places.

Cause we like days off as much as the next guy!

Anyway, Christmas is my favorite holiday...the sharing of gifts, the unrepentant capitalism, good stuff. I would have obtained from this vote however, It’s simply not the power of Congress to pass resolutions like this. No it doesn’t hurt anyone or waste the taxpayers money (for once!) but I’m a strict constructionist, if it ain’t in the Constitution the Congress shouldn’t be doing it.

What kills me about this is when they started that session they opened with a prayer before they had any debate. Remember these are the same people who don’t want anything Christian in our schools anywhere they have any control! Our children are not to say the pledge because it contains in God we trust I would call that what it is pure B.S.
Our forefathers came from a country where the church was more concerened with ruling instead of preaching that is why the “seperation of church and state” and that alone.
There is a websight “thomas.com” that is a congressional record of everything that transpires in our congress, including opening prayers bill content who voted and how and all arguments it is all public record. Does make interesting reading at times.

What kind of sick bastards would stand up in front of their colleagues and the rest of the country and vote against honoring Christmas and Christianity? And why?
