FP: Kenneth Timmerman, welcome to Frontpage Interview.

Timmerman: Thanks, Jamie. It’s always a pleasure to appear alongside other founding members of the Vast Right-wing Conspiracy.

FP: My pleasure as well.

What inspired you to write this book?

Timmerman: In the beginning were the leaks. I was curious how highly-classified intelligence information was winding up on the front pages of the NY Times and in other leftist media. Two stories, in particular, caught my attention initially: the leak of the CIA “secret prisons,” and the smearing of Ahmad Chalabi, to which I will return below.

I knew quite a bit about both stories, and knew that the way they were being reported was incredibly selective and politically motivated. I wanted to track them back to the source.

What I discovered was a vast, underground network of government officials, former intelligence officers, members of Congress and their staffs, who were in bed with a complacent, anti-Bush media. They were eager to publish anything that did damage to this president, even if it put the lives of our intelligence officers or of our front-line troops in jeopardy.

FP: So tell us about the underground resistance movement against President Bush.

Timmerman: It certainly comes as no surprise to readers of this page to discover that a segment of the Democrat party never accepted the legitimacy of the 2000 presidential election, and sought in every possible way to delegitimize George W. Bush.

What I discovered, however, was that this political “pay-back” went far beyond the realm of domestic politics, and that legions of “shadow warriors” purposefully burrowed into the bureaucracy with the sole purpose of undermining the president and his policies.

What this author charges is nothing short of astonishing. If what he says is true, national Democrats are more interested in defeating George W. Bush than protecting the United States from its enemies.

I am surprised that you seem surprised by this. Democrats are more interested in their own political power and prestige than the welfare or protection of America or its citizens. Their political behavior suggests (and has for decades now) that the worse off the country is doing, the more power the democratic party gets. They almost have to hope for the worst for America to acquire the personal power and prestige they quest. Damn the consequences to the Nation as a whole, until they are in power.

Once they are in power, the pull out the tape and start checking the political opinion winds to see what will make the people happy. A little tape here, a little tape their...announce how great things are and what has been fixed...check the poles...Repeat.

Anything that goes bad in America can be attributed to Bush and republicans in general. Therefore, they have to hope for the worst if they want the best for their careers.

I agree with the context of the discussion, but the democratic party's assumed strategy of "hope/strive for the worst so that we get elected" is at best a flawed premise: the premise being that a majority of voters are actually stupid enough to believe that the democrats can do anything right when it comes to America.

I am surprised this book has not gotten more attention, even with the usual MSM bias. It tells the inside story of how the CIA shadow warriors got rid of Porter Goss, for one thing. The story of the forged yellowcake memo. There’s lots of stuff in here. Sabotaging the war effort was probably the worse thing they did.

Seems to me like many people of the conservative stripe (here on FR, Hannity, Dick Morris) were proposing the candidacy for president of a certain prominent black female, now in charge of that snakepit at State Dept.

Porter Goss was Bush's attempt to clean house at CIA. Powell was wrong from the get-go: too many unconservative opinions. The culture at State was also too entrenched for both Powell and Rice.

The same thing used to happen to our schools chancellors here. They would get absorbed by the bureacracy.

Even supposedly conservative Supreme Court Justices get twisted by the pervasive liberal culture in Washington.

I wouldn't blame it on Bush. One man can't fight decades of Gramscied government.

I had long wondered why people on the Left had the propensity to speak more positively about people who would slit their throats than they do about their own country, which affords them more freedom and opportunity than anywhere else. David Horowitz has answered that question thoroughly and convincingly in his Unholy Alliance. Where I felt bewildered and confused, I now feel crystal clear. Unholy Alliance is such a great book.

It begins with the leftist movements at the beginning of the 20th Century, and works its way up to the present day, exploring the anti-American attitude of these movements in detail. Horowitz shows that the enemies of the US back then are largely the same group today, operating under the same misperceptions, making the same mistakes, and pursuing the same impossible utopia.

Individual chapters are included on the Patriot Act (I was persuaded that it is a GOOD thing); the democratic flip-flop on Iraq once G.W. Bush implemented what they agreed with Clinton needed to be done; the driving components of the current anti-war movement; as well as chapters on individual personalities who are major spokespeople of the Left. Horowitz covers a lot of ground, and he covers it concisely and clearly. Unholy Alliance is richly informative without ever being boring or plodding.

This book is so illuminating that I simply cannot do justice to it here. I love people who reason so clearly that they help me get my own reasoning clear. Horowitz is just that type of person! In the terrain of mindless clichés (no-blood-for-oil, etc.), he is a breath of real fresh air.
