Romney: Attacks on Religion Go Too Far
Las Vegas Sun ^ | 12 Dec 07 | Glen Johnson

Republican Mitt Romney retorted to questions about his faith by surging rival Mike Huckabee on Wednesday, declaring that "attacking someone's religion is really going too far."

In an article to be published Sunday in The New York Times, Huckabee, an ordained Southern Baptist minister, asks, "Don't Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?"

"Remember that many of these voters are extremely disturbed at the thought of having a cult member Prestident."

So am I, and that is why I'd never vote for that "ordained" son of Arkansas.....

Sorry about the double post, Rhombus. I hadn’t realized my post had gone through the first time before I’d finished writing it. I did get a “lost connection” message, and I guess that’s when it happened.

P.S. You’re welcome.

OK, I’ll take your word for it that you believed Huckabee was really this ignorant. If you have further questions, I suggest you do some homework yourself instead of defending someone else’s ignorance. All that said, you are free to believe whatever you want but the question was what do Mormon’s believe. There are plenty of sources out there to find that out as the NY Times writer found for himself. And finally, I expect we are going to look really foolish over this whole incident when the real issues bite us in the butt in a few years. Time to come together, not pull each other apart over faith.

‘Don’t attack my Mormonism you bastard Baptist!’ Said the Bishop to the Minister.

A pox on both their houses. Eight years of religious warfare if we vote in either of these two. Plus they are RINOs.

I wonder just how many of these Republicans that have made a personal vow of never voting for (insert name here) will end up keeping their word. Even though I have been a registered Republican since I was able to vote, I’ve never been starry-eyed thinking that Republicans were the salvation and/ or restoration of this Republic.

***Because if things are taken out of context there really is no opportunity to justify the 30 sec sound bite attack!***

Well, here is a great Mormon opportunity....

Justify to the Republican Christian Evangelical, at whom these types of statements are obviously meant to sway one way or the other, in what context is it perfectly acceptable for a man who is suppose to be a Christian President to consider Jesus and Satan brothers in the Mormon sense of meaning. Remember that many of these voters are extremely disturbed at the thought of having a cult member Prestident.

How concern of you, but that has been tried many times here on the RF and the same critics continue to repeat themselve like a recording, so I find this kind of forum futile for this kind of things, because it is the Holy Spirit that witness to the mind, and the Holy Spirit does not dwell where contention flourishes!

The article, to be published in Sunday's New York Times Magazine, says Huckabee asked the question after saying he believes Mormonism is a religion but doesn't know much about it.

The above is all we know about the question by Huckabee. The article in which the question appears hasn't even been published yet.

Note that Huckabee says that he doesn't know much about Mormonism....and THEN he asks the question.

We have no idea of the context or anything yet.

So, I'm giving Huckabee the benefit of any doubt....especially since we don't know what led to Huckabee saying he doesn't know much about Mormonism. Was he asked a question by the reporter? Did he just blurt it out of the blue?

What brought the subject up?

“In historic Christianity, the Trinity means that Jesus was not procreated.”

That historic Christianity only goes back to the Council of Nicea. Prior to that there was a great debate taking place within the Church about the nature of Jesus and the trinity.
The Church fathers in the west, i.e. Rome, decided that the Trinity was what we know it as today, along with other issues and promptly ruled anyone who disagreed was a heretic.

How does this question "bash" Mormonism? If it is a belief of this faith why not say so?

The question "bashes" Mormonism in the way it is asked.

Someone asking an honest question does not go to pretty much the first question to ask Mormons in the anti-mormon playbook and ask "Don't Mormons believe that Jesus and Satan were brothers". Especially a week after saying that he wasn't going to get into beliefs of other religions.

A more correct an honest question about that subject might be something like "What do Mormons (or enter your church here) believe about the relationship between Jesus and Satan."

One religion might answer the the effect of Satan and Jesus being opposites, good vs evil, and talk about the duality in all things.

Another might say something to the effect of Satan is a fallen angel and go through how Satan wants to turn people away from Christ in vengeance against God.

LDS will probably go into their belief's in God's Plan and how Jesus and Satan work in to that. Further questions along that line, and depending on the member you ask, would reveal that the LDS belief is that we are ALL God's children (this is found in the Bible) and all brothers and sisters. You, me, everyone. By that reasoning Satan and Jesus would also be brothers, but NOT in body which is what the question "Don't Mormons believe Satan and Jesus are brothers" eludes to.

Hence, you bring me to my point. Mormons can’t justify what Evangelicals consider a blasphemy by a cult claiming to be Christian. Huckabee probably thinks that it will hurt Romney. He is probably right.

One of the reasons I converted (at age 48) to Catholicism was “evangelicals” like Mike Huckabee who believe it’s their duty to regularly condemn Jews, Catholics, Mormons, basically anyone who doesn’t attend their church.

I spent 30 years in Southern Baptist and non-denominational protestant churches; the pastors REGULARLY lambasted Catholics and Mormons in particular. Well, guess what, Governor? The Pentecostals say (except for themselves) everyone—including Southern Baptists—is going to hell.

IMHO, Mormonism is off the beaten path of Christianity—but I’d vote for Romney in a heatbeat over Huckabee. I want a President, not Jerry Fallwell Junior.

Let’s assume for a moment that Huckabee had an agenda for his question.

Let’s hypothesize that he was TESTING to see if Romney’s supporters were really as TOLERANT as they were wanting others to be.

Did he receive a tolerant response?

The NY Times article is out there. I read it before wading into this discussion. Yeah perhaps the NY Times created an “issue” to pull us apart and Huckabee just blundered into it. Still I’d like to see Huckabee clear it up and he has a great opportunity to do so at today’s debate.

Well said! I'm now anxiously waiting to see if this gets answered.

***Especially a week after saying that he wasn’t going to get into beliefs of other religions.***

What!!! Politicians lie. Say it ain’t so.

***we are ALL God’s children.... By that reasoning Satan and Jesus would also be brothers....***

Reasoning which is rejected largely by the knowledgable Christian. The Lord Jesus is Satan’s creator, not brother. We become a brother to the Lord through adoption. And, since I know that Mormons don’t believe that Satan is a brother through Christian adoption, this idea that Satan and Jesus are siblings is rejected by Evangelicals as a cult’s blasphemy. Hence, its use to sway votes in the Evangelical Republican community.

You know, I don’t really like Romney’s positions, and I’m not planning on voting for him. But this bickering between Protestants and Mormons just makes the party look bad. The dems are probably high fiving each other over it.

And by bickering between Protestants and Mormons, I mean Protestants finger pointing and calling the Mormons cultists. It’s just stupid.

Nice try. But yes he did receive a tolerant response from Romney. As for "his supporters", who really knows who anybody's real supporters are these days. Perhaps all those people who constantly tell me that Mormons are really a cult and they'd never vote for a Mormon aren't really Huckabee supporters but instead Romney supporters trying to rile people like me up. ;-) OK enough tin-foil hat conspiracy theories. I don't need a candidate who tosses out foolish statements as a "test". All I can do is hold a person to his words. I sure hope Huckabee is asked about it in the debate. If he's not too big to say he made a mistake, I'd regain some respect for him as I did when Romney admitted he made mistakes in the past.
