The article, to be published in Sunday's New York Times Magazine, says Huckabee asked the question after saying he believes Mormonism is a religion but doesn't know much about it.

The above is all we know about the question by Huckabee. The article in which the question appears hasn't even been published yet.

Note that Huckabee says that he doesn't know much about Mormonism....and THEN he asks the question.

We have no idea of the context or anything yet.

So, I'm giving Huckabee the benefit of any doubt....especially since we don't know what led to Huckabee saying he doesn't know much about Mormonism. Was he asked a question by the reporter? Did he just blurt it out of the blue?

What brought the subject up?

The NY Times article is out there. I read it before wading into this discussion. Yeah perhaps the NY Times created an “issue” to pull us apart and Huckabee just blundered into it. Still I’d like to see Huckabee clear it up and he has a great opportunity to do so at today’s debate.
