TOLEDO, Ohio A Republican state lawmaker won a special congressional election Tuesday, hanging onto to a conservative district despite a strong push by Democrats.
Union-backed groups and Democrats were hoping to steal the seat from the GOP and make a big statement going into the 2008 election in Ohio, which is expected to again have a significant role in determining the next president.
Republican Bob Latta defeated Robin Weirauch to complete the term of U.S. Rep. Paul Gillmor who died in September from a fall at his Washington apartment.
Latta, the son of a former Ohio congressman, had 55 percent of the vote and Weirauch had 45 percent with 42 percent of the vote counted.
The 5th District in northwest Ohio is conservative and traditionally Republican. No Democrat has won the seat since the 1930s.
But Latta faced a stronger challenge than expected after winning a close primary race in

You beat me by a few seconds! Was just getting ready to post to breaking news.
I guess the pollsters forgot that when you underpoll Republicans to impact an election it sometimes works against the Democrats.....
The “Democrat wave” has already passed and the tide will turn back on them next year. Let’s just hope they keep up their attacks on the military and our counter-terrorism agents. People are starting to realize the Democrats were lying to them about Iraq all along in order to dive us as a nation.
The lead has stretched to over 12% with 80% of precincts reporting.
As long as these guys are not RINOS, I will join you in observing that “we” held on to these electoral seats today.
I heard some of the radio ads the Republican was running.
He brought up illegals and amnesty.
And some would say that is an issue which will hurt the GOP?
I think not.
Good. Ohio’s a major swing state that’s turning blue. We need to do all we can to hold on to as many votes as possible before next November.
nice to hear, whaat was the election in Virginia?
If Ohio turns blue, then I am afraid that the USA will die from sheepelism.
This will be spun as a dem victory by Katie The Dunce on the MSM tomorrow.
excellent. I was pretty concerned this morning when I heard about this race
Ohio is a weird state. We used to have two of the most left wing senators, John Glenn and Howard Metzenbaum, then we replaced them with supposed conservatives who turned out to be worthless RINOs. Thanks to idiots like Taft and DeWine they now suffer under a leftist governor and senator, and Voinovich will probably lose next time. And it didn't have to happen. The Ohio GOP threw the state down the toilet. It's going to end up like Illinois, where the GOP won't have a chance.
Good...looks like the donkeys are as weak as ever...even with all their hard work to win VA and Ohio seat. That should give the donkeys an idea about 2008.
This is your state what ya’ think?
Significant stuff. The DNC put money into this race. They are still believing their own propaganda.
Hey DNC, read FR. Learn. Last year was about corruption scandals. It was not about Iraq. It was not about hatred of Bush. It was about a perfect storm of indicted GOP congress critters who all got indicted at the same time. It signified ZERO change in electorate philosophy.
And your professionals know it. THAT is why your scum suckers went crazy over US attorney firings. You knew they were going to be deployed to find indictable dirt on your own people and reverse that storm. They still will, too, and there is nothing you can do about it.
Psa 2:4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.
The RNC put in nearly twice as much as the DNC. This was a slam dunk Pubbie district. A loss would have been devastating. Fortunately we didn’t lose.
