Given how well the weak on immigration candidates like McCain and Huckabee are doing it would seem to indicate that while upset about Illegals, a goodly portion of voters do not rank it as one of their top issue. They seem more then willing to accept very weak on Immigration candidates because those candidate are saying the right things on their other issues.

I see it differently. I find it remarkable how people like McCain and Huckabee have changed and nuanced their stated positions on immigration. McCain is now an enforcement first guy and Huckabee wants to send the illegals home [albeit have them processed and readmitted in weeks and days, not years]. The Hillary faux pas on the drivers' license question started her decline in the polls and Sptizer abandoned the program. The Dems derisively call immigration a "wedge issue," because they realize that it transcends partisan politics. They certainly don't want it to be one of the defining issues of the campaign.

The MSM and Dems have tried to confuse the issue lumping in illegal immigration with legal immigration. They are not where the overwhelming majority of Americans are on the issue. The GOP must educate the public on the issue and frame the debate. States and local communities are already dealing with immigration on a daily basis including passing legislation. You can't hide the elephant in the room, i.e., 13 to 20 million illegal aliens and a foreign born population [percentage wise] of the US that will exceed, within a decade, the highest it has ever been in our history. There are almost 40 million foreign born residents of the US, far more than have ever come to this country in terms of absolute numbers. There will be a backlash just as there was in the 1920s. And in many ways the problem today is far worse in terms of the threat to our long term survival as a nation. It is unprecedented.

No matter who is elected won't make the problem go away. You and I have had this discussion before with you accusing me of being a Know-Nothing. Along with entitlement reform, I view our current immigration problem as the two greatest threats to our country. We can handle external threats far more easily than internal ones. We are well on our way to a tipping point, if it already hasn't happened. Demography is destiny.

Amazing isn’t it. It is amazing that what he says seems to fly over people’s heads.

Why do you think Huckabee is surging given how weak a canidate he is on a bunch of issues?

I have no idea. I also don't trust many of the polls and MSM pundits. I remember another media creation, Howard Dean. We will see if the Huckabee "surge" is a boomlet that will become a bust or whether he has staying power as the GOP voters become more knowledgeable about his views. Once you become a top tier candidate, you also become a target.

Korb also implied that the only reason Iran wanted nuclear weapons was to defend itself from Saddam.

I guess he doesn’t hear what Nutjob has to say about the Joooos.

You are correct....those 16 agencies do NOT all agree.

And mine own fine senator Biden....gotta love this liar.

What’s flying under the radar is this past week there was a vote to implement more sanctions on Iran. China had been under great pressure to vote for more sanctions but poor China, they got that Korean nut and now Iran working its nuke program for it and all China can do is keep bribing our politicians to get the results they want.

China voted AGAINST increased sanctions on Iran this past week using that NIE as an excuse. Man...what great timing, the release of that thing, huh? Wow, and how handily the leaks to our meterosexual brothers at the NY Times...huh?

We all know who gets the big bucks from China, don’t we? We should know who’s in charge of that shadow government that Rush often refers to, eh?

But I blame Bush. No wait....joke if you want but it isn’t as if this is the man’s second or third year in office. If he didn’t know that there were elements at State who were serving an alternate government of some kind, well he should have. So now we have these unelected minions deciding foreign policy and by me it’s to the detriment of our safety...us silly citizens who carry this country on our backs whilst raising the soldiers and citizens of tomorrow.

I shouted this to my husband that Bush should have fired these people long ago. Husband says don’t I remember the crap Bush got over trying to fire those attorneys?

Well yeah. I know it isn’t easy clearing a viper’s nest like we have and I also understand that many of these traitors are holding on with all they have with the hopes of another Clinton taking control of the WH.

I could spit over that NIE....the ladies at the beauty parlor look up from under the hairdryers and ask their beautician how this WH keeps getting it wrong, witness Iraq’s alleged missing WMD’s and now Bush is trying to get us into another senseless war.

There’s only so much a public can do. At times you gotta depend on your leader. Bush is letting them get away with entirely too much.

Senator Kyl, as always, is the voice of reason. Knows of no statute or anything else that would make the destruction of the CIA tapes a crime.

The requests from a court related to other suspects.

The news accounts on what the 911 Commission asked for are conflicting.

I want to express my thanks to the CIA guy who ordered these things destroyed, btw.

It this contributes to the victory of Hillary or Obama, so be it. I would rather have the Dems be the ones to be blamed for this horrendous mistake than have the GOP be identified with it. I have never been a one issue voter, but there is a first time for everything.

Your attitude is gonna' get us killed AND destroy the fabric of this country. I beg of you to reconsider. There is no way in hell that any of the R candidates (each with some positions we despise) is worse than all 3 branches run by liberals. THAT is what should scare you to death.

Boycotting elections is great for your personal ego, but on a National Level it is a disaster. You would prefer 8 more years of clinton so you can Wash Your Hands.

Until you’ve done everything you can to get your candidate elected you don’t have the right to boycot. Millions have died for that right and you throw it in the trash.

I am sure you are right, Biden read the NIE.

That’s not the problem.

The problem is Biden does not understand what he read.

We’re talking about a man who thinks the Ten Commandments are actually suggestions.

We’re talking about as man who thinks our US Constitution can mean whatever he wants it to mean.

We’re talking about a man who has few original thoughts and has to steal them from people who do.

This is my problem as well Jonnie in trying to ascertain how electable someone like Fred Thompson is and without going over old ground that I was attacked for a few weeks ago. All I have to judge is this site and other Republication/conservatives ones that I visit.

My fears are that to some ultra conservatives and the religious right they will worry over his reputation whilst single and will not care for him having a young wife and family.

To the undecided he he will appear older than his years and does not seem to have the charisma that in the media age we live in will appeal to that category which IMHO will decide the the way the election goes.

I hope that I am wrong and if he gets the nomination he can appeal to the country in general and draw those Republicans together who currently seem divided.

Though I have used Fred Thompson as an example a lot of the other candidates also give me doubts and I worry if they can appeal to the American people as a whole.

I feel that I cannot rely on the bits of American media that I see on British TV as this is so skewed left wing or democrat way that it again does not give me a fair judge of what the average American wants.

I just hope at the end of the day the Republican Party both nationally and locally knows what the average American wants and can get behind the candidate that gives this and therefore ensure they get the nomination and defeats Hiliary as most of us take it as given she will get the Democrat nomination.

Feinstein wants the CIA to be subject to the Army Field Manual.

She says if we waterboard, it puts our guys at risk. I do with that waterboarding was the worst thing they would ever do to our guys.

Thanks for the clarification. It may be 16 agencies but I thought the report is really the work of three leftist activists. No?

According to the Panel this week, everyone thinks that all is peachy keen with Iraq and Iran now...and that would explain the Obama Huck surge and Rudy Mrs. Clinton drop in the polls. How the Panel considers her a hawk is beyond me. And how America thinks we are now safe is also just crazy.

Yes, Fingar, Brill and Van Diepen. They managed to control the final product, the body of which does not support the lead sentence.

It matters not who is the skipper of the Titanic, i.e., if the liberals run all three branches of the government. What will destroy the fabric of this country is the legalization of the 13 to 20 million illegal aliens already in this country and a failure to change our legal immigration policies.

What Huck does very well is tap into his Christianity. He is not apologetic about it and for most Evangelicals, it is a breath of fresh air. He has tapped into that frustration.

You can't hide the elephant in the room, excellent portrayal kabar.

I have spent hours here on several Sunday threads documenting that the 13-20 million figure commonly used is probably closer to 38 million.

My info comes from former Fed. Prosecutor and US German Marshall Fund scholar on immigration James H. Walsh in the book The Social Contract Volume 17 # 4 (Summer of 2007)

Here is a brief synopsis of some of his work and calculations.:

. "My estimate of 38 million illegal aliens residing in the U.S. I calculated, however, using a conservative annual rate of entry (allowing for deaths and returns to their homeland) of three illegal aliens entering the U.S. for each one apprehended. My estimate includes apprehensions at the Southern Border(by far, the majority),at the Northern border, along the Pacific, Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts, and at seaports and airports. Taking the DHS(Dept. of Homeland Security) average of 1.2 million apprehensions per year and multiplying it by 3 comes to 3.6 million illegal entries per year; then multiplying that number by 10 for the 1996-2005 period, my calculations come to 36 million illegal entries into the US. Add to this the approximately 2 million visa overstays during the same period, and the total is 38 million illegal aliens currently in the US." excerpted from a summary of his book by Walsh. Actually Walsh's numbers are very conservative and my be higher since many of the Border Patrol agents he interviewed suggested that those who get caught crossing the border are fare exceeded by those who are not.
