Univision and The Republican Debate In Spanish (Don't Press One For English)
December 8, 2007 | ED

Posted on 12/08/2007 2:19:34 PM PST by Earthdweller

December 9, 2007 - Miami, Florida

Univision, the nation’s largest Spanish-speaking television network, will be sponsoring a Republican debate hosted by the University of Miami on December 9, 2007. The candidates in attendance will be Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson, Ron Paul, John McCain, Duncan Hunter, and Mike Huckabee.

But for millions of people who might want to view the debate, there could be a slight problem, to check the Univison website for air times you need to speak Spanish.

The explaination for a Spanish only site at first glance might be that there is a problem with inserting translation code into the website, but the webmaster clearly has the ability to add the translation software. While an English translation button is absent from Univison’s TV programming site, their English version Corporate site has a predominate Spanish translation button at the very top of the home page.

In addition, on the same Spanish only Univison TV programming site, there is a link to a bilingual site similar to My Space that appears to be a major concession to those Spanish speakers who want to hook up with American dates.

Now, I'm an English only speaker and with a serious thing like a Presidential debate airing tomorrow, I’m in too much of a hurry to hook up or even to wait for someone to put me on their Spanish “My Space” buddies list. I also need plenty of time to figure out how to activate the closed caption on my TV so I can read what people are saying. I figure it's the least I can do so I won't miss out on one of the most important debates of the 2008 election.

So with all this extra work I'm doing, I’m beginning to get a bit frustrated and I’m checking in my Webster’s English to Spanish dictionary to see if there is a Spanish equivalent to the word ‘ironic’.

It's true, I do try hard to be flexible in our ever increasingly PC world. I only moan for a second or two every time I have to push one for English, but I will have to admit that doing so is such an ever increasingly huge daily nuisance and I’ve have never even so much as gotten a thank you note from that machine voice on the other end of my phone.

Considering how much of my time I spend accommodating Univison's usual viewer-ship, it seems to me that Univison could at least offer me an English translation button so I can view their website.

But then again, accommodation is a two way street..in a perfect world.

OK So, for an American in the USA who just happens to speak English, what tv channel will the debate be broadcast in English?

And or an English stream link? if such a thing exists :^)

I guess you didn’t get the point. I’m a moderate on this issue and it ticks me off... I can’t imagine how angry it makes others. Why is everyone going out of their way to purposely make it difficult to get information about this?

“Why is everyone going out of their way to purposely make it difficult to get information about this?”

Good question. I want to know if our candidates tell them the same tough border talk as they tell us.

I was not looking for a point. I posted what point I wanted to make and I believe others will too.

Sorry to say the pro-illegal immigration folks are not going to be able explain it well if they disenfranchise the American public in general from seeing this debate. I don’t think an attempt to hide this debate under a hat, intended or not, is helping anyones cause. Do you?

We have a Spanish station on our cable that will air it at 7:00PM Eastern here in Florida. I guess they won’t have it in Spanish and English, so I won’t understand a thing! Was hoping that perhaps it would be carried by C-SPAN in English, so the rest of us could get to hear what all the candidates have to say!

"Good question. I want to know if our candidates tell them the same tough border talk as they tell us."

Major discrepancies on any issue is a candidate killer. This is probably going to be the most difficult debate so far for the candidates. It's actually a must see.

Intentional segregation is being practiced by Univision. Why?

Intentional segregation is being practiced by Univision. Why?

They have no intention to integrate into America, while at the same time demanding to reap the benefits of a culture which they had no role in creating . The same thing is happening with Chinese and other "sacred cultures" in the multicultocracy.

FYI..I checked the closed caption on the station. It’s in Spanish as well with no way to translate. That’s just special isn’t it?

So there is no coverage in ENGLISH of the Republican candidate debate?? This is sickening! Does anyone know if there will at least be a english transcript of the debate?

My hope is that they at least translate the questions to the candidates so we will know what they are responding to in real time. It’s valuable information to check body language along with verbal.

I’m wondering if there will be a live thread on this one.

This was my original thought on this debate. It may have been a little out of the mainstream for FR, but, well, we cannot agree on everything all the time. We are still all patriots. I thought Duncan should actually take a negative and turn it into a positive. Seeing as he has a lot of Hispanic support in his district (of US citizens) AGAINST illegal aliens coming in, he could talk to them and thank them for their supports, and also reach out to lots of Americans Citizens of latino descent who are ALSO TICKED OFF ABOUT ALL THE ILLEGALS. I have talked to some of them. They are out there. And they are voters. I thought Tanc took the ostrich position and it will not necessarily benefit him:

"Not impressive. Actually, bad move. Go anywhere and anyplace and if necessary, go smack into the Lions Den and tell them their faces they are wrong on immigration (and let it be translated in Spanish). Put the full weight of the GOP down on illegals in any forum you can. This is psy war at its best. If Duncan gets a rousing chorus of BOO's when he lets into ILLEGAL ALIENS, this is a great clip to use for political contribution purposes. It is like Terry Anderson running that fool Brown Beret Cepeda on his show (a tape) over and over. In a way he is giving him airtime, but the point is, he makes up for it in fortifying our side to stand its ground. If I were Tancredo I would reconsider, and show up, and get the badge of honor of being booe'd and hissed on stage, and let the RINOs there moderate on TV and accordingly dig their own graves with the GOP base on this one. Good for Hunter. Furthermore, I would do this. I would make my introduction in English and slow it down (to what the VOA calls "Special English" speed) and say "Thank you, Univision, for this unique opportunity. However I would like to say this. What is better for you, my Hispanic fellow citizens, is not rely on Spanish language here as I speak, but make the extra effort to learn this English--as I am speaking in it--and we will even slow it down for you if you need it to get started. Before you know it, you will be fluent, and a full participant in our country's affairs, in the land of our country, English. Please make the effort as millions of immigrants from other lands have before you. I will not insult you by thinking you dont have enough brains to learn English by insisting you only rely on Spanish without any progress." 25 posted on 12/05/2007 6:36:14 PM EST by AmericanInTokyo (McCain?
