Huckabee Wanted to Isolate AIDS Patients (in 1992)
Guardian Unlimited ^ | December 8, 2007 | ANDREW DeMILLO

Posted on 12/08/2007 7:34:01 AM PST by dano1

Mike Huckabee once advocated isolating AIDS patients from the general public, opposed increased federal funding in the search for a cure and said homosexuality could ``pose a dangerous public health risk.''

As a candidate for a U.S. Senate seat in 1992, Huckabee answered 229 questions submitted to him by The Associated Press. Besides a quarantine, Huckabee suggested that Hollywood celebrities fund AIDS research from their own pockets, rather than federal health agencies.

``If the federal government is truly serious about doing something with the AIDS virus, we need to take steps that would isolate the carriers of this plague,'' Huckabee wrote.

(snip)

When asked about AIDS research in 1992, Huckabee complained that AIDS research received an unfair share of federal dollars when compared to cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

``In light of the extraordinary funds already being given for AIDS research, it does not seem that additional federal spending can be justified,'' Huckabee wrote. ``An alternative would be to request that multimillionaire celebrities, such as Elizabeth Taylor (,) Madonna and others who are pushing for more AIDS funding be encouraged to give out of their own personal treasuries increased amounts for AIDS research.''

(snip)

Since becoming a presidential candidate this year, Huckabee has supported increased federal funding for AIDS research through the National Institutes of Health.

(snip)

``What people do in the privacy of their own lives as adults is their business,'' Huckabee said. ``If they bring it into the public square and ask me as a taxpayer to support it or to endorse it, then it becomes a matter of public discussion and discourse.''

Those interested should llok at the entire article. I had to cut some interesting statements because of the 300 word limit. Also, IMHO, our knowledge of HIV/AIDS has changed a lot since 1992.

Huckabee must know something about epidemiological principles to make wild public health statements. This of course, violates the laws of political correctness, not to mention the marketing of deviance by the gayly diseased community.

Well the quarantine was not necessary, though he may not have known that then. The idea of having Hollywood celebrities fund the cure is fantastic. I wish he still promoted that idea. Hollywood is always talking about taxing me more. They are zillionaires. They push the idea that homosexuality is healthy and good. Let them fund the cure for AIDS. Great idea! There’s a lot of justice in that.

I don’t know why this Huckabee supporter posted this.

If you notice, Huckabee now supports federal funding for AID’s research.

This is just another example of a Huckabee Flip-Flop.

This is still true. Good for him for having the courage to say it.

``My administration will be the first to have an overarching strategy for dealing with HIV and AIDS here in the United States, with a partnership between the public and private sectors that will provide necessary financing and a realistic path toward our goals,’’ Huckabee said in a statement posted on his campaign Web site last month.

I don’t even think the pig found an acorn this time. I agree that too much public money goes into research funding but the idea of isolating people because they have aids is just plain insane.

Only if it were more communicable, like typhoid or other diseases. However, we must not let the god of political correctness make these decisions for us, rather public welfare.

I’m surprised this is coming out now, since the dems are going to hit him with it again if he gets the nomination.

Agreed on the gods of political correctness, but we knew back in ‘92 AIDS was not communicatable...unless you liked certain types of activities. The gay population did a great job of educating their own and working hard to limit risk.

Sonme one needs to address the causes of AIDS, most can be avoided by a change in life style...but not a peep out any politician on that aspect..

Oh well, even a blind pig finds an acorn every now and then.

Those were, so to speak, my thoughts - broken clock and all.

I felt the same way - all other deadly, communicable diseases throughout the ages, were isolated, and millions of others were protected.

Additionally, like TB, the sufferers were not complicit in their illness, where with, in the beginning, most of the AIDS patients not only contributed to their illness but continued in the life style known to spread it - and had little compunction about spreading it to others.

But they were able to turn it into a "PC" issue and they DID get far more funding than other deadly diseases.

Then it got loose in the drug user domain and spread like wildfire. And they were allowed to make money selling their contaminated blood. How many tens of thousands have died due to "PC"

I liked the "let Hollywood celebrities fund aids research from their own pockets" idea much better.
Frankly, I'm sick to death of cure aids funding drives and the feds giving billions away, only to be spent by the UN on fancy hotels, fine cuisine and useless conferences, then send their minions out to promte abortion and promote gay sex.

Want a cure for aids? keep your butt covered and pants zipped.
As for the aids epidemic in Africa, how many times can the total population die from aids? How many times has it been now, 2- 3 times ? If aids is such an epidemic in Africa, you'd think they would have learned by now how NOT to catch it.

Perhaps more evolution needs to take place until they do. The same applies for aids in America, and everywhere else. There is a cure available to stop the spread of aids, and it's completely free. The problem is those who spread it don't want to take it. Too bad.

The quarantine would have contained the disease that has now infected millions in this country. Don’t buy the PC gay agenda statement that quarantine is ineffective.

Problem is hollywood has engaged the liberals to force the taxpayers to sink billions into this useless moneypit easily resolved with eliminating deviant behavor.
