An unammed cruise ship of Norwegian registry sailing the Caribbean Sea, has requested the urgent assistance of the U.S. Coast Guard and the Puerto Rico Ports Authority. An undetermined number of passengers have come down with "gastrointestinal problems". At least one requires hospitalization.
The cruise ship is approaching the Port of the City of Ponce in Puerto Rico's southern coast and will be docking later today. Authorities there are standing by to provide assistance.
The ship is expected to continue to Miami after dropping off the patients.

Patients will be taken to the Damas Hospital in Ponce. If necessary, they will be air lifted to the San Juan medical center.

They should have taken them to Cuba, I hear they have great health care there.

No excuse for this to be so common.

Oh, from the “cutesy” headline, I thought they were talking about cockroaches or bed bugs.
Cruise ships and Mexico have long been crossed off my vacation plans.

I cruise every year. Royal Caribbean is the best, IMO. Never had problems of this kind.

No wonder. I was on the Adventure of the Seas later in the summer and they were very much on top of this.

They are probably going to conclude this is a norovirus; while generally non-life-threatening, a case study did reveal these facts:
"CLINICAL COMPLICATIONS OF NOROVIRUS INFECTION
Study: Outbreak investigation
Site: 5 hospital wards (1 Nov 2002 Â 31 Jan 2003)
Source of infection: Hospital 72, community 12
Impact
Patient attack rate = 38% (72/219)
Nurse attack rate = 76% (60/79)
45% of patients required intravenous hydration
22 patients had elevated creatinine (3 required hemodialysis)
3 patients developed ventricular tachycardia (1 needed cardioversion)
2 patients s/p renal transplant required D/C of immunosuppressives
