WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Senate's No. 2 Democrat on Friday asked the Justice Department to investigate whether the CIA obstructed justice by destroying videotapes that documented the harsh 2002 interrogations of two alleged terrorists.
A day after CIA Director Gen. Michael Hayden told agency employees the tapes were destroyed in 2005, members of Congress, human rights groups and lawyers for accused terrorists said the tapes may have been key evidence that the U.S. government had illegally authorized torture.
In a letter to Attorney General Michael Mukasey, Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin of Illinois asked for a probe of "whether CIA officials who destroyed these videotapes and withheld information about their existence from official proceedings violated the law."
In a speech on the Senate floor, Durbin dismissed the CIA's explanation that it was trying to protect the identities of the interrogators.

I heard the tapes were destroyed after congress reviewed them and, the oversight committee saw the tapes and approved them be destroyed. All by the book.
The facts don’t matter when you’re “right”.
Your point is also made here, buried deep within the article, which is headlined with this....
CIA 'illegally destroyed' interrogation tapes
The MSM's counting on consumers not reading past the headline and a few paragraphs. Fortunately they no longer have a stranglehold on the news :)
Read that a few times in quick succession...
I think that Durbin could use a good whipping.
Delivered request Monday, 18 October 2004, has received no response, even though 212,798 have supported the request.
Yep, the AP has that right - From what I've heard, there are lots of people who, when they take a Number 2, think about Dick Durbin...
I remember reading about these tapes and their destruction a while ago, tho I can no longer cite the source; seems to me like it was months ago.
The CIA made 3 mistakes here: 1) taping the extreme interrogation of prisoners; 2) destroying the tapes; 3) admitting it.
why dont they pass the fing tax bill so people will get their refunds on time.
I hope a nuke cooks off in DC...I swear
Torture....HA...you want to read about what torture actually is...check out what the vietcong did to our troops...take a look at what the Japanese did to our troops....now that was torture...WE’VE DONE NOTHING TO THESE ISLAMIC TERRORIST...there just isn’t any comparison...
Senator Bond of Missouri was just on and said he reviewed the tapes and there was nothing out of ordinary.
Bond is a member of Senat Intel Committee.
Next year, Sen. Durbin will run for his third term, and the republican nominee will probably be Mike Psak, a Chicago conservative who has been campaigning for four years. Psak is the only pro-life candidate in the race, and he supports President Bush’s Iraq policies. He’s pro-tax cuts, pro-spending cuts, anti-illegal alien, pro-gun rights, and anti-gay marriage. His nominating petition was signed by voters who live in 96 of Illinois’ 102 counties. Please read his website, www.psak4ussenate.com.
