Mayor: Sledding ban meant to protect city

Mayor Phil Mitman said he grew up sledding in Nevin Park and later watched his children do the same.

But we live in such a litigious society that a municipality's primary job today is to find ways to avoid lawsuits, he said.

Anyone who headed to Hackett or Nevin parks this week for the season's first snow was greeted by signs banning sledding, tubing, skiing and snowboarding at the risk of a $300 fine.

"If people wouldn't sue the city, we wouldn't have to do this," Mitman said Wednesday. "Those signs protect the city of Easton in a court of law."

If people wouldn't sue the city

Not "people" - trial lawyers.

He’s got a pretty damn good reason for it. Did you even read the article or just the headline?

I read it and saw no “pretty damn good reason”. I see a city cowering in fear of the almighty trial lawyer.

They’d better prohibit snowball fights too. Especially since kids have been known to pack the snow around rocks or to ice-up their snowballs.

A single lawsuit would cost the city a couple of million bucks, just to show up.

Sled anyway. If the police happen by, they will chase you away. Nobody is going to get fined.

If you plow into a tree and break your neck, the city can point to the sign and say “we tried” as a defense. This way everybody is happy.

The ACLU will probably step in to prohibit "snow angels" in city parks...

He is a jerk. A republican mayor who backed democrat Ed Rendall for Governor.

Close the parks in winter. That sounds good.

You might slip on the ice and hurt your back/neck/arms.

You might eat yellow snow.

You might celebrate the Pagan winter solstice.

You might lick a cold pole and get frozen to it...

"I read it and saw no “pretty damn good reason”. I see a city cowering in fear of the almighty trial lawyer."

Maybe the city should be act big and brave like you who apparently has never been sued for everything you own by a trail lawyer. Or else you have super-powers to make you immune from nuisance lawsuits.
