Oh darn— I’m flying across the country on the 24th...but wait, No TSA means I can bring my 5 oz shampoo? Wooohooo
To: icwhatudo
I’ll work that day but, other than last minute Christmas shoppers, the roads will be mine. WAAAAAAAAAAAA!

You were right, TR......this issue makes people nuts. If not for the extended SCHIP re-authorization deadline, I’d probably be working the 24th AND the 25th.

Why am I being pinged...?

"I really feel sorry for the people that have to work at the gas station on Christmas morning. They have to sell cigarettes and coffee to the people that work at the video store..." Amen.
With some lines of work (EMS, Fire, Law Enforcement), weekends and holidays come with the territory, and I'm sure most go in with eyes wide open.
However, I can remember back in the '50s and even '60s that holidays like Thanksgiving, Easter and Christmas just about shut down everything else.
Nowadays, even some of the "big box" stores are open, dragging their $8.00/hr employees in away from their families.
I don't think it's had a positive impact on our culture, and I don't think it's too much to expect that the coffee, cigarettes and videos be picked up a day or two before Christmas.

I have no problem with this. Going to work on Christmas Eve is a joke anyway...especially if you’re a government employee.

Hey, I’m a Gov’t employee and a nurse. I can walk into a patients room and say, “Hi, I’m from the government and I’m here to help” and mean it :) (ducks as stuff is thrown at me)

"In fact, if I worked in the private sector I'd be making a hell of a lot more than I am now." Pray tell, why would you STAY in your "Government Job" - if that is true??
I've always resented the term "Federal Employee", State Employee, etc.......they are CIVIL SERVANTS and should grasp the significance of that term and behave accordingly....

I couldn't agree more with you both. I have to work holidays, but it's necessary and I DID know it going in.
The idea that folks are torn away from their families on Christmas/Thanksgiving/etc. so I can get a Wii at 15% off, or a movie because I'm bored makes me sick. As an absolute rule, I don't patronize businesses those days. Don't want to reward that kind of anti-social behavior.

How does that effect us? I always feel like Im getting screwed when this happens. I'm a field office pogue, and therefore nonessential. Most people were going to be gone on leave anyway, so it won't impact workload. As for the officers who have to work that day, I believe they'll get holiday pay.
