let us give thanks to the divine ‘author of liberty.’
Nice line.
Mr. Romney couldnt have done this any better. I am very, very, very impressed. What courage and leadership for him to do this. God bless us all (no matter what our religious beliefs are)!
And so it is for hundreds of millions of our countrymen: we do not insist on a single strain of religion rather, we welcome our nation's symphony of faith.
"Recall the early days of the First Continental Congress in Philadelphia, during the fall of 1774. With Boston occupied by British troops, there were rumors of imminent hostilities and fears of an impending war. In this time of peril, someone suggested that they pray. But there were objections. 'They were too divided in religious sentiments', what with Episcopalians and Quakers, Anabaptists and Congregationalists, Presbyterians and Catholics.
"Then Sam Adams rose, and said he would hear a prayer from anyone of piety and good character, as long as they were a patriot.
"And so together they prayed, and together they fought, and together, by the grace of God ... they founded this great nation.
"In that spirit, let us give thanks to the divine 'author of liberty.' And together, let us pray that this land may always be blessed, 'with freedom's holy light.'
"God bless the United States of America."
Amen to that.
thanks for the excerpt...I will have to hear this speech...
Values! Yes.
It is sad but inevitable in our highly polarized political atmosphere, that anyone running for any political office in America would have to explain his religion in politics. This counrty, inasmuch as many would like to deny it, was founded on Christian principles and tolerence for all. I thought we all got past this with Kennedy and Catholics even though us “papists” were not invited to the “table of freedom” for nearly two hundred years.
Maybe I have a problem with my media player - the audio wasn’t too clear at the ustream.tv site - is there any other video available?
Rush LOVED the speech and is saying that this is exactly what the campaign was missing -— something to bind us together. He believes the speech emphasizes, correctly, what binds us all together — our values and moral convictions.
I am not a supporter of any particular candidate in this primary process. I was, however, impressed with what this man had to say. It hasn’t made me a supporter, but it impressed me. He went into areas of personal beliefs that I thought he would avoid and navigated quite well.
I’ve heard only about 30 seconds of the speech, and haven’t read it yet, but it looks a lot better than Kennedy’s awful 1960 speech.
I just can’t vote for Romney in the primaries (and wouldn’t be too excited in voting if he is the nominee).!

I'll look around. For some reason, the Romney campaign chose ustream.tv as their official source for streaming the speech live and hosting it afterward. I TIVO'd the speech and if my version is better and I can't find another online, I'll upload it to YouTube or something to provide a better version of the speech on the Internet.
Bingo!! YESSSS....!!
He’s an impressive guy but I’m a Duncan Hunter type. In any case, all the Republican candidates, in spite of their shortcomings, are far better than anything the Dims have to offer.
Wow. Just Wow!!! Whether, or not, Mr. Romney’s profession of faith assuages the fears of those who fear other faiths or denominations, it is a profession of my faith. Mitt Romney has said it all as far as I’m concerned.
I’m so proud to be an American today — well, every day, but today, ESPECIALLY. Thanks for saying what needed to be said — not as far as Mr. Romney’s faith is concerned, but as far as what it means to be an American. Amen, Mitt, and all God’s children should say, “Amen.”
