Romney takes leap of faith with religion speech
CNN ^ | December 6, 2007 | Staff

(CNN) -- White House hopeful Mitt Romney said religious liberty "is fundamental to America's greatness," in his Thursday address on faith in America.

..."There are some who may feel that religion is not a matter to be seriously considered in the context of the weighty threats that face us. If so, they are at odds with the nation's founders," Romney said.

"Freedom requires religion just as religion requires freedom. Freedom opens the windows of the soul so that man can discover his most profound beliefs and commune with God. Freedom and religion endure together, or perish alone," he said.

..."If I am fortunate to become your president, I will serve no one religion, no one group, no one cause, and no one interest. A president must serve only the common cause of the people of the United States," he said.

If it comes down to Mitt or Hillary, I seriously doubt they'll go with Hillary. Some might stay home, maybe, but I also doubt that. Conservative Christians take their civic duty to vote very seriously.

Never even crossed my mind that they would vote for Hillary...or any of the DemocratMarxistSocialistLiberal candidates. But some will stay home...and not vote. I don't think there's any doubt about that. How many is anyone's guess.

I doubt that too. When he was running for governor of Massachusetts, no one made an issue of it. Moderates, which make or break a general election, don't really care, and they'd be turned off by attacks on religion.

The POTUS is a much greater prize...than governor. IMO, If we don't think the Dim candidate won't directly or indirectly go after Mr. Romney's...as you say "bizarre" beliefs...We aren't thinking.

Furthermore, there are plenty of leftist Mormons in top positions, like Harry Ried. If the media go after Mitt for his Mormonism, they're also going to make Ried look bad. I doubt they'll want to do that.

Well...I beg to differ. That's never stopped them before...and won't stop them now. They've gone after every Pubbie under the sun...that's even had a smell of some marital problem. But let the Clinton's slide...

No, I suspect Mitt will have to be a lot more worried about other things, like the flip-flopper label. That's what's really going to haunt him if he wins the primary. I think he can beat it, though.

Agree about the flip-flopping...and if that doesn't appear to stick in the mind of the Dim candidate, and the Sheeple....then expect the religion angle. How deep and how wide....I have no idea.

FWIW-

I would have to say there are only a couple of religions that would disqualify a candidate for me: Satanism and Scientology.
I choose these because of what they do to the person and teach the person to do to others.

And Islam would NOT disqualify a candidate from serving? What does the Quran "teach [a] person to do to others"?

I could NEVER vote for a follower of Muhammed for any public office. NEVER.

Regarding Mormonism, I truly believe that Jospeh Smith simply made it all up, as did that other guy Muhammed mentioned above. And that the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints is as much of a "religious fiction" as is Islam.

Having said that, I could vote for Romney if he is the nominee. Hmmm, better stated, I _will_ vote for him if he gets that far.

At least in his speech above, he says that he will take his oath of office with a hand on The Bible.

What would B. Hussein Obama rest his hand upon?

Hello, Walter, how are you?
That is not the only source for Romney’s record.
Who is your candidate?

Dems will go after whatever they can if they think it will help them win. What does it matter whether it's POTUS or governor? The fact is, it was not an issue in the MA general election because going after religion tends to offend moderates, who are the key to any general election.

If somone starts asking him about theology, all he has to do is pull the religious liberty card, which tends to play very well with moderates.

As to Christian conservatives staying home, yeah, it's possible, but to make a difference, it would have to happen in large numbers in swing states. The states where they are rabidly anti-Mormon (i.e. Texas, South Carolina, Mississippi, Georgia, etc) tend to be safe GOP states anyway.

Do you really think it will make a difference in places like Ohio, Florida, New Mexico, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania? I doubt it, but I could be wrong.

I know hundreds of great people...wise, kind, reasonable, honest, etc..etc.....that wouldn’t set foot in the political arena...based on what you have to go through and do.

It is amazing what candidates go through. They get my admiration just for that, for subjecting themselves to the muck and the mire.

I know I’m not equipped for the political battle.
Too thin-skinned.

It would be nice if some other Fred boosters would be a credit to their candidate the way you are.... there’s always the future chance of a President/Vice President combo there...:)

The pathetic attempts to derail an election of importance to this Nation into a nasty fight re religion vs. religion are truly failing on this forum as we speak. I agree: BORING.

I’d be interested to know what you think about this thread on a website devoted to harmed ex-Mormons:
