CNN has posted a Political Ticker entry trying to create a "gotcha" on 2nd Amendment supporter, Fred Thompson. CNN's South Carolina Producer Peter Hamby has breathlessly announced that "Thompson does not have hunting license," but the question is... so what?
...I know hundreds of gun enthusiasts in my area of interest and only a small percentage of them are avid hunters..., some being only interested in... collecting... firearms.
Yet, here is CNN acting as if Thompson should be looked at askance because he does not currently have a hunting license, quite despite that he has had them in the past and been hunting many, many times throughout his life (unlike Mitt Romney who claimed to be a hunter "all his life," yet had only hunted twice during that same lifetime). CNN seems to have no idea that there is more to gun enthusiasm than hunting.
Let us also visit the actual 2nd Amendment for a second, shall we? In fact, the 2nd Amendment has no discussion of hunting in it at all. It is the military usage of guns and the protection they afford that the 2nd Amendment is interested in, not hunting. That being true, it is perfectly in keeping with the 2nd Amendment to never hunt at all, yet still be interested in safeguarding that right to own firearms.
So, even if Thompson never hunted a day in his life, he can still be a perfectly legitimate spokesman for 2nd Amendment rights. Not that CNN has even the vaguest grasp of the issue, obviously.
The gotcha didn't work CNN. Back to the drawing board. Oh, and, Peter Hamby should do himself a favor and actually read the Constitution next time he tries a foray into questions the answers to which are so obviously over his head!

Most folks don't get their license until they know they're going . . . unless they're lucky enough to be able to hunt deer in the back yard.
And of course all the target shooters (small and large bore rifle as well as pistol), combat pistoleros, Cowboy Action shooters, skeet and trap shooters, sporting clays shooters, metallic silhouette shooters, and plinkers -- as well as the folks who just have a shotgun or pistol around for home defense -- don't need a hunting license at all.
CNN just really hasn't got a clue. There must not be a conservative or a gun owner in the place to fill them in.
It reminds when Goober Kerry went searching for a hunting license in Ohio, “Can I get me a hunting license here?”.
Thompson doen’t have a hunting license at the present time?
CNN sure has unearthed a scandal of epic proportions there. Having those teams of crack journalitst has really paid dividends with this one. The public will be utterly captivated with this story for nanoseconds.
I can forgive him for this but please don’t tell me he doesn’t have a fishing license.

Just one final statement.
Ive been sitting here getting more and more fed up with all of this talk about these, pieces of machinery, having no legitimate sporting purpose, no legitimate hunting purpose, people, that is not the point of the second amendment!
The second amendment is not about duck hunting, and I know Im not going to make very many friends saying this, but its about our right, all of our right to be able to protect our selves from all of you guys up there.
And nobodys talked about that.

I carry a firearm everywhere I go. I stay out of the woods. Yhe animals stay out of the grocery store.
I don’t own a rifle. I guess I’ll have to resign from the NRA.
I don’t own any guns, but belong to the NRA.
I don’t have one either. I’d MUCH rather be in a warm bed at 4am on a November morning than crouching in a frost-laden marsh. Guess that makes me anti-2A.
That’s o.k., we’ll pick up the slack for you.
Except when they need to steal some drug money. But then, in most places, you don't need a license for hunting that kind of animal.
I’m a gun owner but don’t have a hunting license because I don’t hunt any more. This is just liberal pap from a bunch of yahoos who don’t know any better.
