Absolute moral authority?
"A Missouri mother says she will do whatever it takes to stop former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee from becoming president, because he freed the man who went on to rape and murder her daughter, Carol Sue Shields (pictured).
I cant imagine anybody wanting somebody like that running the country, Lois Davidson of Adrian, Mo., told the Blotter on ABCNews.com.
Wayne Dumond was initially sentenced to life plus 25 years for raping a 17-year-old Arkansas high school cheerleader. In 1999, a parole board voted to free Dumond, after then-Gov. Mike Huckabee announced his desire to see him released."
If youre not up to speed on the Dumond saga, get there because the rest of the fields going to start flogging it. In much the same way that he conveniently omits the meager three-year residency requirement for the illegal alien tuition breaks he sponsored, Huck is quick to emphasize that he never took any official action to pardon Dumond or commute his sentence. Which is true, according to this Byron York piece from October, but also fails to mention that Huck did lobby the parole board on Dumonds behalf. Why? Partly because he doubted the guys guilt; read Yorks account to see why. But theres more to it than that:
"Critics, and some friends, too, say Huckabees position was deeply influenced by his Christian faith. When I first met him, I was going through his positions on issues and I said, Youre a conservative, so Im sure you oppose granting parole for violent felons, says Dick Morris, the campaign consultant who ran Huckabees first run for lieutenant governor. And he said, Oh no, I would never take that position, because the concept of Christian duty requires that there is a possibility of forgiveness. The concept of Christian forgiveness requires that we keep open the process of parole use it sparingly, but keep it open. When I ask Huckabee about that, he reminds me that he was tough on a lot of criminals, too. Heck, I executed more people than any governor in the history of the state, Huckabee tells me. Its not something Im bragging about, Im just saying that if it had been simply a matter of my Christian conscience saying I dont believe in capital punishment, then I was pretty lousy in my conscience. Watching him speak, its clear Huckabee feels deeply about the issue. If he continues to rise in the polls, its likely hell be talking about it a lot more."
What makes Huckabee such a fascinating character is that he so often seems to pit two traditionally conservative values against each other: Christianity on the one hand and law and order on the other. Its the same with his immigration position, where he wants (or so he says) to get control of the border while also happily encouraging illegals to immigrate with the prospect of scholarships or tuition breaks. He hasnt cited any faith rationales for his stance on Gitmo but you can imagine that taking shape pretty easily. Exit question: How far is too far? Using Christianity as a shield for some of his more liberal positions may help in a pinch but theres a segment of the base that already has qualms about the explicitness with which hes touting his religion as a political asset. If hes pushed on Dumond and invokes the spirit of mercy as justification, is it going to spook even mainstream conservatives?
This could become “Willie Horton” on Steroids.
Exactly right.
Check out my definition of “front runner” in my tagline ...
You’re right, this story doesn’t reflect well on Flabby Mike’s judgement...or honesty.
The rush to the “Huckster” must be driven by the DNC, since he must be who the DNC wishes to run against in Nov 08...
There is TOO MUCH unforgivable for most conservatives or Americans in the “Huckster’s” record....
I do NOT want a “forgiving” bleeding heart, nor an open borders advocate in the office of President.....
The “Huskster” is both.
Folks need to remember that many of the most vocal “christians” in America have been proven to have “feet of clay”....
“Critics, and some friends, too, say Huckabees position was deeply influenced by his Christian faith.

In the good old days, those sentenced to death were given an altar-call invitation to confess their sins before God, and accept Jesus Christ, because in 10 days they would face Him.
I hate squishy, feel-good, nonsense.
Sheesh. Every day it’s something else with this clown Huckabee.
No wonder the dying, socialist “mainstream” newsrooms are pushing him - - he’s one guy the rats can beat.
Rasputin for President!! :-)
Yet another example of some good ol’ Huckabee Amnesty.
Is this the face that sinks Mike Hucksterbee? We can only hope.
Exactly. The MSM is pushing him because he is a weak candidate and a clown as you noted. There is no question that he will lose, especially now with his Willie Horton moment.
I have a hard time looking at him for longer 30 seconds.
What bothers me are his teeth. He has a terrible smile.
BUMP FOR LATER
I dont think its Christian to value the rights of criminals over the rights of victims....nor Christian to value the rights of illegal aliens over the rights of American citizens
And we are worried about Mitt Romney’s faith?
Hucksterbee sounds dangerous...and I feel for this woman losing her daughter based on Huckster’s “faith”
You’re right and as I remember it, many here thought he was innocent. If I remember right, most here thought the Huckster did the right thing getting him out of jail.
Still, if it keeps him from being nominated or getting the VP slot, I don’t care what the thought was here.
He’s another Jimmy Carter.
Huckabee really stinks! and Thank you for your posts, now his agenda is clear!! Fred Thompson in 08!!!!!
The MSM doesn’t want to see Rudy go up against Hillary. They can’t very well hit Rudy on his family life if he is running against a Clinton.
The MSM wants Huckabee. They are salivating at the thought of depicting him as an out of touch with reality, country bumpkin, whose faith based political views are very similar to
Bush’s.
Good for her. I would vote for McCain before I voted for Huckabee and I despise McCain.
