WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson Monday said he didn't need to apologize for his faith, despite concerns from Christian conservatives that he does not express his religious beliefs enough on the campaign trail.
"As far as faith is concerned, I have not made any secret as to where I am. I am a Christian," Thompson said, noting that, while he does not attend church while at home in McLean, Virginia, he does attend church with his mother when he visits in Tennessee. "I have no apologies to make about my religion or my relationship to Jesus Christ or God."
In a column in USA Today Monday, David Domke, a University of Washington journalism professor, said Thompson has not done better in the polls because "he lacks a religious niche" and "Christian conservatives have not been amused or enthused" by his lack of church attendance and the few times he has talked of his faith on the campaign trail.
Thompson dismissed those comments, saying "I'm OK with the Lord, and the Lord is OK with me, as far as I can tell."

Dr. Dobson ain’t gonna like this.
And I honestly don’t care.
That is just your opinion ansel12, you can really only speak for yourself!
You say add I say restore!
Moronism = denunciation of a faith by religious gatekeepers for no other reason than differences on dogma, no matter how blasphemous those dogmas may appear to all but the uninitiated.
CNN - Damned if you do and damned if you don’t.
But only if you’re a Republican.
Fred answered exactly as I would have done. I am okay with the Lord and the Lord is okay with me. I am covered by the blood of Jesus Christ. There IS nothing more than that.
Oh and one more thing - its 1980.
Unfortunately the evangelicals voted fot the "Peanut Man". You see...he was a "Born Again" and that made it OK.
Huckabee = Carter.
xxxxxxxx
lol......You are right. Dobson won’t approve.
I love Fred’s honesty.
“The MSM does not like Fred.”
The problem is that some of the blowhards that have declared themselves our “leaders” in Christianity don’t like Fred either.
Well, yes it does actually (Heb. 10:25), but it also says that where two or three are gathered together in His name that He will be in the midst of them. (Matt. 18:20). Who is to say that Fred and Jeri don’t study and worship privately when they aren’t in TN?
I understand why Fred might worship publicly when he goes home to TN, and not in other places. But, I don’t know for certain why he does it, any more than the folks criticizing him know the reasons.
My inclination is to believe that Fred’s relationship with the Lord is more secure than many,if not most, of his judgmental critics. The fact that he doesn’t make a show of his faith is no indication that it isn’t more genuine than those who love to make a public show of theirs.
Yes, and I believe Jesus said something about not judging or condemning others. He also recommended prayer to be done privately and quietly because God knows what you want.
Name the denominations that officially accept the Mormom church as Christian.
I spent some time in both Georgia and Alabama (my first wife was born and raised in Georgia) during the 60's. I can attest to the fact that thinking Conservatives knew that Carter was a nutter and a phony. And being from California I knew Reagan was the real deal.
I voted for Reagan and was perplexed why Conservative Christians fell for the "I'm a Born Again" line from the "Peanut Man".
“Fred should denounce Moronism as a cult and be done with it once and for all. If Fred is not against Moronism then how can he lead?
Moronism = denunciation of a faith by religious gatekeepers for no other reason than differences on dogma, no matter how blasphemous those dogmas may appear to all but the uninitiated.”
Say What??
I think Fred will do what he feels like, Mitt will as well, and so will I - it is a free country. So, I will not be browbeat into voting for someone with whom I fundamentally disagree on religion, no matter what names I am called.
“The religious stuff is nothing but dirty politics.”
So, an-religion is the only religious discussion allowed? That is, anything but religion can be discussed inpolitics? My, how Hugo Chavez of you.
I am covered by the blood of Jesus Christ. There IS nothing more than that.
So if Mitt Romney says that (or a John 3:16 equivalent) I trust you will not attack his sincerity?
While I go to church regularly, I suspect there are more verses dealing with gluttony than not attending church. Somehow, I doubt all the fat Christians worry about the gluttony verses...
Not talking about you, but I’m not too worried about Fred. He’s not running for President of the SBC.
I am not concern about what other denominations think or believe when I know for a fact the This is The Church of Jesus Christ he had counsel Joseph Smith and his other servants to restore His Church once again on Earth
A pass from what? When we use the word Cult, do you think that it is a description for Mormonism that is just a slang word, thrown out there because of Mitt Romneys candidacy?
All of the various denominations that we belong to identify the Mormons as a Cult, that to the unaware, mimics Christianity on the surface.
