WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson Monday said he didn't need to apologize for his faith, despite concerns from Christian conservatives that he does not express his religious beliefs enough on the campaign trail.
"As far as faith is concerned, I have not made any secret as to where I am. I am a Christian," Thompson said, noting that, while he does not attend church while at home in McLean, Virginia, he does attend church with his mother when he visits in Tennessee. "I have no apologies to make about my religion or my relationship to Jesus Christ or God."
In a column in USA Today Monday, David Domke, a University of Washington journalism professor, said Thompson has not done better in the polls because "he lacks a religious niche" and "Christian conservatives have not been amused or enthused" by his lack of church attendance and the few times he has talked of his faith on the campaign trail.
Thompson dismissed those comments, saying "I'm OK with the Lord, and the Lord is OK with me, as far as I can tell."

“So it is Christian scholars that decide? Jesus gets no say?”
Think before you post.
It seems he ignores that what he says they are all on lock step a united front since they do depend on the their church for their income!
Just think if they were more tolerant of the LDS maybe their flock would not be so brainwashed and those clergy positiond might deminish!
After all The Church Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is a lay church!
You are right. The lay church scares them to death. It is (besides the doctrine) why we can grow so fast, plus we share the overhead to a degree they can only dream about. In my past, I was in a mega church and about 97% of income stayed right in that building. The LDS Church reverses that % with about 90% shared worldwide.
Thompson does attend church in Virginia, a freeper told me he goes to the same church as her roommate. He goes to church in TN when he is there.
So to say that he does not even attend church is erroneous. He has been a member since a teenager, and attended faithfully with his children from his first marriage. He still goes to church and hasn’t given up on it. I believe the problem is with the church in Virginia near where he lives. They may not be in agreement on belief and practice. If there is a problem like that he would not want to talk about it.
What was once the Christian church took up the name United Church of Christ. Not the same thing.
In the 1800’s the church of Christ had a split, ones that left became the Disciples of Christ [missionary society, instrumental music].
About 1950-1960 there was another split, ones that left were the institutional church. They use the name church of Christ.
The non-institutional groups are often referred to as conservative [not a good term as that is relative to what?] and they use the name church of Christ.
Eastern states, like Virginia, have not very many churches that are non-institutional and they are far apart. It is difficult to determine what they believe and practice. In TN there are a lot of institutional and non-institutional. The church where Fred’s mother attends looks like it is non-institutional from their website.
The churches in VA can be entirely different from TN. They are all autonomous.
Bing, I am so tempted......Lord help me.
Jesus paid it all.
A Presidential candidate’s stated faith is of relatively minor significance. Show me their track record and their positions.
One reason I’m not voting for Huckabee, though he and I share the same faith. He’s wrong on significant issues (ILLEGAL immigration, for example).
Fred is a good man.
The Lord decided that when He said in the Bible that nobody was to take away from or add to that book. The Mormon “church” cannot be a legitimate Christian church on that basis alone.
Says the same thing in the OT. I guess the NT is a fraud too.
I think we are in agreement but to be clear and so no one trying to follow this conversation will miss the key points:
Yes, Christ paid the price for our sins,
In acknowledgement of his price, as a reciprocation of his eternal love, we have the courage to surrender
our pride,
our doctrine,
our offenses that we have committed and those against us,
our lives,
and more, empowered by the Holy Spirit to accomplish good works
knowing that an eternity in Heaven is more than compensation for any Exhaltation lost or any suffering gained here on Earth.
Acknowledging Christ’s work is our first work, and accepting His free gift is our Price.
Whether you like Huckabee or not as a candidate, do you really think Huckabee is not being honest with his faith? He was a former minister, and so gets a lot of attention to his faith. He shouldn’t be penalized for that by voters any more than Fred should be for not talking about it much.
As a Christian, I am glad to hear Fred talk about it. It would not make any difference to me as a voter, but I am always glad to hear the testimony of the converted.
I heard Thompson say on the news the other day that he doesn’t regulary attend church but does go when he visits his mom. I think he might know more than you.
A large part of the testimony of the converted is Worship.
Fred does not appear to worship. Worship is the right response to the sacrifice of Christ, and our salvation. The closer one is to salvation, the more eager the worshiper.
And I will let Christ decide if I am a Christian and if I am His Disciple. This is one of my favorite hymns:
I believe in Christ
1. I believe in Christ; he is my King!
With all my heart to him I’ll sing;
I’ll raise my voice in praise and joy,
In grand amens my tongue employ.
I believe in Christ; he is God’s Son.
On earth to dwell his soul did come.
He healed the sick; the dead he raised.
Good works were his; his name be praised.
2. I believe in Christ; oh blessed name!
As Mary’s Son he came to reign
’Mid mortal men, his earthly kin,
To save them from the woes of sin.
I believe in Christ, who marked the path,
Who did gain all his Father hath,
Who said to men: “Come, follow me,
That ye, my friends, with God may be.”
3. I believe in Christ—my Lord, my God!
My feet he plants on gospel sod.
I’ll worship him with all my might;
He is the source of truth and light.
I believe in Christ; he ransoms me.
From Satan’s grasp he sets me free,
And I shall live with joy and love
In his eternal courts above.
4. I believe in Christ; he stands supreme!
From him I’ll gain my fondest dream;
And while I strive through grief and pain,
His voice is heard: “Ye shall obtain.”
I believe in Christ; so come what may,
With him I’ll stand in that great day
When on this earth he comes again
To rule among the sons of men.
It seems he ignores that what he says they are all on lock step a united front since they do depend on the their church for their income!
Just think if they were more tolerant of the LDS maybe their flock would not be so brainwashed and those clergy positiond might deminish!
I don’t think that the Mormons can diminish the Roman Catholic Church and the rest of Christianity.
Ok, this is what I was addressing:
“Fred doesnt even attend church, yet his minnions attack Romney ad infinidum about his religion. How insane is that!”
You said that, he doesn’t even attend church. I took that to mean that he never went. Now in this post, you say:
“I heard Thompson say on the news the other day that he doesnt regulary attend church but does go when he visits his mom.”
Now you’re saying he does go. So which is it? I trust the freeper who told me that her roommate goes to church with him in VA. He isn’t there every week in VA. I don’t know exactly how often he goes but if you are saying he never goes that isn’t correct.
Yes Fred I agree. But are you ok with pissant and is pissant ok with you?
Pissant - glad you are back and I am still a fan.

There was a President who, due to hectoring by his minister about the level of participation in services by “prominent” attendees, quit attending services when the activity in question was scheduled. His name: George Washington.
