Some, like the Catholic League, are saying Golden Compass is a $182 million movie project with an anti-religious message for kids
Note: Nicole Kidman is a Catholic and claims she doesn't think it to be anti-Christian...

‘Do you have a personal relationship with Christ?’
Yes, he tells me to use the tools God provided to make decisions. These include, but are not limited to, my eyes and ears, and my common sense.
I agree. I read the first book because I’d enjoyed some of Pullman’s other fiction: historical mysteries, “The Ruby in the Smoke” and so on. “Golden Compass” wasn’t bad, especially since I wasn’t looking for anti-Christian bias. I read “Subtle Knife” because I was curious about where the story went. By the end, I was tired of it and wished I’d spent the time watching “Magnum P.I.” reruns and doing cross-stitch.
Before the third book came out, I read an interview with Pullman, in which he said that his purpose in the series was to lead children to reject Christianity. Since then, I haven’t read any of his books, and have told my children not to (and why). They have plenty of better books to read. Then I heard the third book was a stinker, anyway!
Wow, activist at 13 (and for the right reasons).. someone raised her right.
Too icky for me. Sam Neill is one of my favorite actors, too. I wish he’d make more films I want to see :-).
well we are giving the anti-god folks lots of free PR with this.
There.Fixed it.
> Christians are admonished to seek out the good and avoid the bad:
Yes, but hasn’t this been taken to extremes? I mean, there was a lot of dustup about the Harry Potter books and films, and some have even condemned Oz materials because of the “good” witches in them.
When the answer is ambiguous, I like to go in and see for myself so I’m informed about the thing beyond hearsay. You’re entitled to your approach, however.
Yes, each book got worse. The second at least had an interesting story, but the third made me ill.
Fair enough. I will refrain from further comment . . .
I’m glad I missed it, then.
Personally, I’m not sure you can take this to extremes. I grew up with the Wizard of Oz and have always loved it, even now. But as an adult, I do question the good witch character. And I think Harry Potter is not a series to be read by Christian children, but I will not get into that argument here on FR because I know I’m in the minority. I consider this Pullman trilogy far worse than the two stories mentioned above. I bought the third book without realizing what it was and regretted putting a few pennies in Pullman’s pocket. I found the first two second hand. And I refuse to see the movie. I’ll watch it if it comes on TV and I won’t do that if there are children in the house.
Didn't mean to say not to comment and keep discussing, I just thought it would save you some research and answer your question. It's a good item to discuss as it is a little hint that Kidman does take her Catholicism seriously (or at least, is really creeped out by $cientologists)
I don’t think it has been overblown regarding the Harry Potter books. Rawlings said after her last book was out that Dumbledorf was actually a homosexual. When you lift up people opposed to your values don’t be surprised to see them . . . oppose your values. The difficulty is that the secular and anti-Christian left has such a firm grip on Hollywood that you will see far fewer movies than you might otherwise prefer to. Then again you don’t fund your enemy and lift up someone who will do harm.
> Yes, each book got worse. The second at least had an interesting story, but the third made me ill.
Absolutely — from a story telling standpoint the last book (with the worst anti-God ranting) was one of the most uncompelling I’ve had the misfortune to read.
