KHARTOUM, Sudan - A British teacher jailed for insulting Islam after allowing her students to name a teddy bear Muhammad was released Monday when Sudan's president pardoned her, a British Embassy spokesman said.
The conviction of Gillian Gibbons under Sudan's Islamic Sharia law shocked Britons and many Muslims worldwide. It also inflamed passions among many Sudanese, some of whom called for her execution.

Paranoid religion -- nothing can be more dangerous.
And note that our valiant media, in the headline, ratified this event as an insult to Islam. Disgusting!
Can't think of anyone less threatening than a first grade teacher and her innocent 6 year old students.
The conviction of Gillian Gibbons under Sudan's Islamic Sharia law shocked Britons
There was no insult.
Islam is deranged.
Islam is a mental illness. Don't expect anything other than irrationality from these people.
Thank God (the real God) that she is free. May she have a safe trip home.
You see, Islam IS a ROP. They are just misunderstood. I do not want to read any more nasty comments from you guys and gals.
I’ve wondered about the safety of those little kids who actually proposed and voted on the name. I would guess they are scared; it would be traumatizing. I’m glad hey don’t have to witness their teacher being stoned to death.
The West continues to believe they can negotiate with this group.
I believe I have heard many dumbocrates declare; "If we can just sit down and talk to them, they will really understand that we are good people."
Deranged, and in this instance stupid as well. I trust the British Muslims who intervened on her behalf pointed out that in English-speaking countries, naming a teddy bear after someone is a sign of affection for the person, not an insinuation that the person is ursine.
Folks, never forget this is the country George Clooney wants us to invade on behalf of a province known as ‘Darfur’.
Only airheads from Hollywood can come up with hating Bush for fighting Islamofacism, and at the same time demand we invade a Islamofacist regime....(eyes rolling)
“The case also sparked criticism from many Muslims in the West” — well, I wouldn’t go THAT far. I did read one statement from one person. It is Religion as Usual for Islam.
Islam is an insult to humanity.
The “believers” in Sudan act no differently than the “Denied “ minorities, kool aid drinkers of the MSM, Daily Communards and “Truthers 9/11”.
Now excuse me, I have to go out in the yard and pickup the “Mark Cubans” my dog left in the grass.
Those six year olds weren’t innocent. They named a teddy bear Mohammed.
(Seriously, with all we know of Islam, this shouldn’t surprise us, but I found myself more incensed and outraged over this one than any recent incident. Thanks be to God she’s headed for home.)
Gillian must have been terrified.
Happy she's going home.
Are we to assume from this statement that all of those screaming-weapon carrying idiots in the streets screaming for the teachers death were representatives of the Sudanese government? B.S.!
The MOST ludicrous thing about Muslim anger over the naming of that innocent inanimate and harmless Teddy Bear “Mohammad” as insulting the “Prophet” and Islam — is the name Mohammad being given to all the ignorant and murderous assholes throughout the world of Islam!
Do NOT those murderous bastards insult the “Prophet”, or are they following the path of the “Prophet”????
Which is it people?
Is Islam a religion of peace, or a “religion” of murder, mayhem and ignorance???
The evidence supports the latter.
As long as folks remain in denial about Islam these incidents will continue to shock.
See anything wrong with that wording?
Shouldn't it be: "A Bristish teacher accused of insulting
..."
She did not insult Islam - the accusations of barbaric jihardists does not make a thing true...
Or: "A British teacher who allegedly insulted..." (The famous "allegedly" prefaces every one accused of of the least of crimes until the time they are convicted - it's journalistic 'law' to keep from being sued. Maybe this poor, beleaguered lady should sue AP for slander - she'll likely need funds to go into hiding for some years.
