Murtha's comments on 'surge' are a problem for House Democrats
Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa.), one of the leading anti-war voices in the House Democratic Caucus, is back from a trip to Iraq and he now says the "surge is working." This could be a huge problem for Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and other Democratic leaders, who are blocking approval of the full $200 billion being sought by President Bush for combat operations in Iraq in 2008.
Murtha's latest comments are also a stark reversal from what he said earlier in the year. The Pennsylvania Democrat, who chairs the powerful Defense Subcommittee on the House Appropriations Committee, has previously stated that the surge "is not working" and the United States faced a military disaster in Iraq.
Murtha told CNN on July 12, following a Bush speech, that the president's views on the success of surge in Iraq were "delusional."
"Well it's delusional to say the least," Murtha told CNN's Wolf Blitzer. "As I said earlier, and you heard me say it, it's a failed policy wrapped in illusion. Nothing's gotten better. Incidents have increased. We have had more Americans killed in the last four months than any other period during the war."
Murtha added: "I don't acknowledge there has been any progress made. Maybe in Baghdad. But it just breaks out someplace else. We called for extra troops two years ago. We put money in for 30,000 troops. They haven't even been able to raise the 30,000 troops they have. So they have to break all their guidelines. But there's no progress being made."
Back on June 3, during an appearance on ABC's "This Week," Murtha bashed the White House for "making excuses" on Iraq.

He would never say this except to further his own agenda. Getting re-elected. Polls must show him losing ground on his hate America stance. Time to love and support America again, for a little while.
Is Murtha up for re-election in November of 08?? This is about the only reason I can see him being honest for once.
“He would never say this except to further his own agenda. Getting re-elected. Polls must show him losing ground on his hate America stance. Time to love and support America again, for a little while.”
Big dittoes!!!!!!!
Yup. All House members are.
The fact that he only got 60% of the vote last time, despite being the Bob Byrd of Johnstown PA must have really scared him.
Seriously, politicians scare that easily.
House Reps are up for reelection EVERY two years, so the answer to your question is a resounding YES.
Whats amusing about the House race is Ron Paul appears to be in pretty serious political trouble in Texas.
*********** MURTHA.......the other white bitch ***********
Americans elect democrats even though a report of victory is a “huge problem” for the dems? And I’m supposed to be hopeful about our country?
And the republicans will still be too stupid to sink Hilary with how totally wrong she was.
Jack Murtha is running for re-election?
Who’da thunk it?
I thought Jack was all about principle.
You just have to dig pretty deep to find it.
ALL congresscritters are up for election every two years.........and 1/3 of the senate...........
I have this image of Murtha as the Marine Captain from the scene in “Full Metal Jacket” sitting at the head of the “Stars & Stripes” editorial table during the announcement of the Tet Offensive. Pelosi is Pvt. Joker, BTW. You know the scene: the one about “It’s a big Sh- Sandwich and we’re all going to have to take a bite!”
Well the Surge is working so I have this image of Pelosi taking a bite.
Will the dems now denounce him as a drunken old fool?
Will the DU demand that he be arrested and his words stricken from all records?
Stay tuned and find out!
I’ll bet Maha Rushie has the answer to this one!
Being a congress critter Murtha is up for reelection every two years ... which is next year for him. He's in good shape in western PA, this will help but he's in absolutely no jeopardy of losing his seat. He's changed his opinion because, in the face of hard cold facts, he can't further deny the success of the U.S. and coalition forces in Iraq. It's apparent to him the 'Rats are going to have to re-strategize, or look even more so like the fools they already are. Their next tactic, already underway, is to diminish and dismiss any progress the Iraqi government is making internally.
How can they when she was all for the war. She voted for the war. She claimed she was all for it when the grabbed Saddam... Oh you mean that part where she said she was against the war and that she woudl pull troops out immediatly and that the war was a failure?? Well, that part doesn’t count. If the NYT doesn’t say it, it didn’t happen.
End the pussyfooting, Murtha is a dick.
Of course it’s going this way... Murtha’s the only one of the Democrats with “credibility” because of his veteran status. So they use him on point to change their message.
Just wait, in 1 month the real push will begin - to change history so that the surge was a Democrat idea and Democrat agenda, and if only the President had listened to the Democrats and implemented the surge in 2004 the war would have been over in 2005, rather than winding up in 2008...
I hope Pelosi chokes on it.
