ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said yesterday that he hopes to convince voters that his Mormon faith is mainstream.
"I think as people come to know my faith they'll recognize that the values of my faith are they very much flow from the Judeo-Christian tradition of this country. I believe in God, I believe in Jesus Christ, I believe in the equality of all humankind," Mr. Romney said in an interview with The Washington Times.

It is Mr. Romney's Mormon faith that remains a question mark in his presidential quest. The governor is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a faith that says adherents are on a journey toward godhood, that God speaks to man today through living apostles and prophets, and that the Book of Mormon, published by Joseph Smith in 1830, is the word of God.
Mr. Romney has remained mostly mum on the topic; despite his desire to deliver a speech about his Mormon faith, he has accepted the advice of political aides who advise against the move. When he was asked last year whether he wears temple garments, white underwear similar to a mesh shirt and boxer shorts that signify purity, he said: "I'll just say those sorts of things I'll keep private."
The candidate's religion, however, threatens to become a very public campaign issue and a dangerous one. In a recent Gallup survey, just two-thirds of conservatives said they could support a Mormon candidate.
Meanwhile, other candidates, while skirting around the edges, have also brought up the governor's faith.

I believe in God, I believe in Jesus Christ
Mitt also believes that God (Elohim) and Jesus (Jehovah) are two separate
beings who were once men but became gods through good works, and now
live on the planet Kolob.
So what? I just don’t see why the details of his mythology differing with the details of your mythology makes any difference at all as to whether or not he would be a good president.
The standard Christian mythology is pretty strange too from the point of view of someone with entirely different beliefs.
The fact that Americans are a religious people is praiseworthy. The fact that so many appear to be bigoted in their faith is frankly disgusting.
We just had an interesting FR post on “Eight Years of Liberal Hatred.”

There seems to be a lot of hatred on the conservative side of the spectrum as well.
“broncobilly hasn’t created an about page”!
And you stay right there in your swamp.
Do you know of a “fair and balanced” website that explains Mormonism? I always thought they were Christian, but I’ve had friends-—mostly Baptist-—saying they’re not and I want to get to the bottom of it.
Bronco my boy your are just past your 3 month anniversary on FR and you just exposed yourself as a LIBERAL.
Your statement, which I quoted, is typical of liberals as a rebuttal to anything they don't like. Fact is you are a Mitt fan, and as most Mitt fans do, you bring up hate.
hmm...wasn’t the Washington Times founded by Sun Myung Moon?
I recommend you start with Mormonism Research Ministry. Their executive director, Bill McKeever, is a Christian pastor who has ministered to Mormons for more than 30 years. They have a wealth of information on their website including articles explaining Mormon beliefs. Be sure to also check out their multimedia section and their links.
“Romney puts faith in Christian past”
He does? That’s quite a trick because Romney isn’t a Christian!
“Thats quite a trick because Romney isnt a Christian!”
You are so right. Here’s just a little smidgeon of the heresy of Mormonism:
“No man or woman in this dispensation will ever enter into the celestial kingdom of God without the consent of Joseph Smith... every man and woman must have the certificate of Joseph Smith, junior, as a passport to their entrance into the mansion where God and Christ are... [Joseph Smith] reigns there as supreme a being in his sphere, capacity, and calling, as God does in heaven. Many will exclaim—’Oh, that is very disagreeable! It is preposterous! We cannot bear the thought!’ But it is true.” - Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, vol. 7, p.289-91
If one thinks about it, Judaism is as or more distant from the Christian tradition than Mormonism.
From what I gather, Jews do not believe in:
-the Trinity
-that Jesus was the Messiah
-original sin
-one person can die for the sins of another
Ask Mitt what a “Dan Angel” is.
Errr, what changed his mind concerning the blacks of this world? He was raised in his Mormonism to believe they were an inferior race and were treated as such. The church "decided" to "accept" blacks in 1978. To this day, the Mormons I know (regardless of their ages) do not "accept" blacks as equals intellectually.
In all fairness, we don’t know Romney’s heart and we don’t know his belief in Christ.
BUT we can look at the religion he follows and proclaim that the LDS Church is NOT a Christian religion. Just as we can look at the followers of Islam and proclaim in unChrisian. This is not hateful.....it simply is truth. At least Islam is not trying to hijack Christianity like Mormonism is, by using the same words with different meanings to deceive the very elect.
Matthew 24:24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if [it were] possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
In 1978, Mitt was 31 years old and in Leadership in his Church. As an adult man, Mitt upheld the LDS racist doctrine.
As an ex-Mormon, I’ve never heard of Dan Angels, but I have heard of Danites (Avenging Angels).
Orrin Porter Rockwell, John D. Lee, and Wild Bill Hickman were Mormon members of the 19th century American infatida.
